Seelgerätstiftung

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A soul device foundation is the foundation of certain investment income with the purpose of holding a Holy Mass with the special intention of the salvation of the soul on a regular basis, for example on the annually recurring anniversary of the death of the founder . In medieval thinking, such a recurring prayer or sacrifice should help the “poor soul” to eternal salvation, as with a device. Through such foundations, considerable assets and land holdings have been transferred to the Catholic Church or to Christian monasteries and dioceses . In return, the church took on the obligation to hold services for the dead and vigils for the founder or the family.
