Georg Laurenz Grüll (born July 21, 1900 in Rechberg , † September 18, 1975 in Linz-Urfahr ) was an Austrian historian and archivist . In particular, he made an outstanding contribution to the history of Upper Austria . However, his activities during the Nazi era and anti-Semitic statements after the war are to be classified as problematic.

Life

Georg Grüll came from a family of teachers, was born in Rechberg in Upper Austria and grew up in St. Florian . After attending elementary school, he studied there for a year in the collegiate high school before he was a student at the academic high school in Linz from 1912 to 1915 . During the First World War , interrupted by military service in the Dolomites , between 1916 and 1920 he attended teacher training institutions in Linz and Krems.

Between 1920 and 1924 he was a teacher in Rechberg and in Allerheiligen im Mühlkreis , Katsdorf , Münzbach and St. Nikola an der Donau . In 1924 Grüll was appointed director of the elementary school in Lohnsitz near Gaflenz, which he managed until 1937. During this time he prepared the family files as the basis for the as yet unpublished local family book Gaflenz. In 1939, he was as full Gau for clan customer operates. During the time of the Second World War , interrupted again by military service, he was senior teacher at the Diesterweg School in Linz . During this time he was also active in the working group for family research , whose archive he handed over to the Upper Austrian Provincial Archives after the war , where it is still located today. During the Nazi era, Grüll worked as the head of the "main office for ancestors" at the Gauleitung Oberdonau of the NSDAP and was responsible for creating a "foreign and mixed race files (Jews, Gypsies, Negroes, Mongols)". In 1945 he was dismissed from school as part of the denazification process . Between 1945 and 1946 Grüll was taken prisoner of war by the English.

Georg Grüll was already researching the history of Upper Austria when he was still in high school. During his time as a young teacher, he intensified this hobby and wrote his first publications. In 1923 he published his work on Mitterberg Castle in the municipality of Pergkirchen near Perg as a newspaper article.

In 1946 Georg Grüll was hired by the Upper Austrian Provincial Archives, whose employee he remained until his retirement in 1965. There Grüll developed into a sought-after historian and author of more than 120 scientific papers. His main works include the three-part series on castles and palaces in Upper Austria, the exploration of the reasons for the peasant uprisings in the peasant wars (in "Bauer, Herr und Landesfürst") and the development history of agriculture in Upper Austria (in "Bauernhaus und Meierhof").

In addition, Grüll was still involved in community and church archives in his free time, such as those of Gaflenz and Weyer or that of the Lambach Monastery , which is still laid out today according to its 1946 order.

Georg Grüll dealt with a wide variety of topics. However, he focused on researching castles and palaces as well as on rural economic history. Here he also created his most important works, which often broke new ground and are of lasting value.

After his death, Georg Grüll left 97 boxes with alphabetically ordered correspondence, material collections on individual publications, card catalogs on genealogy, onenology and archive holdings as well as newspaper clippings to the Upper Austrian Provincial Archives.

Georg Grüll was married to Katharina, a farmer's daughter from Pergkirchen, and had five children.
