Life

Wilflingseder came from a humble background; After attending primary school, he began an apprenticeship with a miller in Gurten at the age of 13 . Due to an accident at work with injuries to his right hand, however, he was no longer able to pursue the planned profession of miller. The pastor of the hospital in Ried im Innkreis , Joseph Müller, made it possible for him to study at the humanistic grammar school in this city. Here he passed his school leaving examination with distinction in 1943 . Because of his injury, he was unfit for military service, but was briefly committed to a student compensation service with the Reichsstudentenführung in Berlin . Then he was able to study geography, German literature and history at the University of Vienna during the war . During his studies he became a member of the KÖStV Austria Wien . After the war he was able to continue his studies at the University of Innsbruck , where he received his doctorate in philosophy in 1947 . In 1955 Wilflingseder married Heidi Wimmer, the marriage had two children.

After completing his studies, he completed a course at the Austrian National Library and was thus able to get a job at the Federal Study Library in Linz from September 1, 1948. On August 1, 1969, he succeeded the director of this institute, Kurt Vanesa (1948–1969), and as such, on January 1, 1970, he was appointed real councilor . From 1971–1978 he also managed the library of the newly founded University for Artistic and Industrial Design in Linz. In 1985 he retired.

Wilflingseder was a member of the Upper Austrian Museum Association . He was a member of this association's committee from 1960 to 1979 and held the office of secretary from 1960 to 1965.

In addition to his work as library director, Wilflingseder has intensively pursued his historical interests. Starting with his dissertation on the rule of Steyregg and his work on the rule of Lustenfelden and the Lonsdorf tower , he has become a specialist in the history of the Linz area. Other work concerned Egeregg and the Weingarting estate . He also worked on the Linzer Regesten or those of Neydharting . In his later years he did master singing and work on the history of Catholic fraternities (CV) . Also worth mentioning are the obituaries he wrote for the local historians Franz Bohdanowicz and Josef Amstler or his fellow historian Georg Grüll .

His work is characterized by the meticulous processing of the existing document material. He comes to new insights, z. B. on the ownership structure in the Linz and Mühlviertel region; Just as important are its economic, legal and social historical findings (e.g. about residents or the medieval legal system).
