The Upper Austrian Museum Association , since 2013 Society for Regional Studies and Monument Preservation Upper Austria , is an association founded in 1833 to promote regional studies.

history

On October 1, 1833, the association came into being at the instigation of the Upper Austrian district administrator Anton von Spaun and the historical researcher and Florian canon Franz Kurz. Other founding members were District President Alois Ugarte, Bishop Gregor Thomas Ziegler , Count Philipp Engl zu Wagrein, Baron Johann von Stiebar , the Mayor of Linz Joseph Bischoff, the board of the Linz merchants Franz Planck and the pharmacist Anton Hofstätter. On November 19, 1833, the statutes of the association were confirmed by Emperor Franz I during his stay in Linz. One of the goals of the association, which at that time was called the “Association of the Fatherland Museum for Austria ob der Enns with the epitome of the Duchy of Salzburg”, was to build a museum in Upper Austria. The Joanneum in Graz , founded in 1811, served as a model , similar to how the Styrian Provincial Archive created in 1868 served as a model for the establishment of the Upper Austrian Provincial Archives in 1896. Initially, the respective governor or district president was the head of the association, and from 1869 a specially appointed association president.

At the first general assembly in 1834, the association already had 719 members. In 1839 Archduke Franz Karl of Austria took over the patronage, which is why the museum in Linz is called "Francisco-Carolinum". In 1844, the members of the Salzburg district founded their own museum association in Salzburg , which halved both the number of members and the amount of donations and the publication of the museum gazette had to be temporarily suspended at the end of 1844 for financial reasons. During this difficult time the association benefited from the discovery of the Celtic burial ground in Hallstatt by the salt miner Johann Georg Ramsauer . The custodian of the association, Georg Weißhäupl, drew the plan of the corpse field and faithful images of the found objects, and the basis of a collection of Celtic antiquities was laid out.

1884 of the construction was Francisco-Carolinum (now Upper Austria. Landesmuseum) Museum started that on 29 May 1895 by Emperor Franz Joseph I. was opened. In 1896 the Upper Austria. State archive founded.

In 1938 the association was initially banned and President Ignaz Zibermayr resigned. From 1938 to 1945 the association was entrusted with the “Museum of the Reichsgau Upper Danube” under the name “Association for Regional Studies and Homeland Care in the Upper Danube Gau”.

In 1946 the Upper Austria was restored. Museum Association under President Eduard Straßmayr . In 1976 the name of the association was changed to "Upper Austrian Museum Association - Society for Regional Studies". In 2013, the museum association merged with the “Association for Monument Preservation in Upper Austria” to form today's “Society for Regional Studies and Monument Preservation Upper Austria”.
