Johann Nepomuk Count Ungnad von Weißenwolff (born May 11, 1779 in Vienna , † April 27, 1855 in Linz ) was an Austrian officer and politician.

biography

He came from the noble family of those of Ungrace von Weißenwolff . 1809 was major of the 5th Lower Austrian Landwehr Battalion, 1812-1814 he served in Infantry Regiment No. 59, then 1815-1819 as Lieutenant Colonel in Infantry Regiment No. 14. In 1819 he retired from active service.

From 1825 Count Weißenwolff was entrant of Steyregg , Spielberg , Luftenberg , Lustenfelden and Parz in Upper Austria as well as Obersterblandhofmeister and chairman of the Upper Austrian gentry .

In 1848 he took over the high command of the Linz National Guard to suppress the revolutionary machinations in Linz.

From 1848 to 1855 he was director of the Linz Museum and President of the Upper Austrian Agricultural Society . In addition, he was commandant from 1809 kk and from 1837 commandant of the Leopold Order .

He had been married to Sofie Gabriele Countess Breuner (1794–1847) since 1815.

Weissenwolff was also a patron of the arts. Franz Schubert , who stayed with the count's family for a while in 1825, wrote to his parents: "In Steyregg we stopped at Countess Weißenwolff's, who is a great admirer of me, who owns all of my things and also sings some very nicely." Schubert's songs from Walter Scott's “Fräulein vom See” (op. 52), which met with particular approval, are dedicated to her.

His obituary says: “He was a gentle gentleman to his former subjects; cheerful, witty, a friend of his friends, a patron of the arts and sciences, inexhaustible in charity, unshakably loyal to his monarch, full of deep and true religious feeling, Count Weissenwolff was the image of a real nobleman. "
