Urban von Trennbach (born May 10, 1525 in St. Martin im Innkreis , † August 9, 1598 in Passau ) was Prince-Bishop of the Diocese of Passau from 1561 to 1598 .

Life

Trennbach studied in Vienna from 1538 to 1540 and from 1542 as Passau domicellar in Ingolstadt . From 1545 he continued his studies in Bologna and Padua . A cavalier tour took him to Rome.

In 1550 he became a member of the cathedral chapter in Regensburg and in 1556 in Salzburg . In 1550 he took over the post of cellarer for the Bavarian and in 1552 also for the Austrian possessions of the chapter. In 1556 he was appointed provost of the cathedral in Passau. He became bishop in 1561.

For reasons of trade policy, Trennbach distanced himself from Bavaria and tied his diocese closely to the Habsburgs . Not only did he get his successor to come from the House of Habsburg, but from now on all Passau prince-bishops came from the Austro-Bohemian nobility until the secularization in Bavaria .

He is buried in the imposing high grave of the Trennbach Chapel, built between 1568 and 1572, in the cloister of Passau Cathedral.
