The Obernzell Castle is a former water castle in Obernzell in the district of Passau.

history

The Passau bishop Georg von Hohenlohe († 1423) began the construction of a moated castle, which his successor Leonhard von Laiming completed in 1426. In the years 1581 to 1583, Prince-Bishop Urban von Trennbach had the building expanded into a representative Renaissance palace.

The castle was the seat of episcopal keepers until the 19th century . Occasionally the prince-bishops also stayed here, for example in 1680 when a city fire ravaged the residence . After secularization in 1803/1806, the state of Bavaria took over the building and used it as an official building. The old gate tower was demolished in 1816. From 1975 to 1977 the castle was completely restored and opened to the public as a ceramic museum.

Building description

The castle is located on the banks of the Danube as a mighty four-story building with a half-hip roof . The narrow side is decorated with a picture of Mary with the baby Jesus. Adjacent to this are the remains of the wall and round defense towers in the east. On the west side a bridge leads over a drained ditch to the entrance. The baroque garden figures come from Neuburg am Inn Castle .

On the first floor there is a late Gothic chapel with fragments of wall paintings (1425 to 1439). The so-called knight's hall with a reconstructed coffered ceiling is well worth seeing on the second floor . It serves regularly as a concert hall.

museum

Around 1200 objects can be seen in fifteen rooms on a total of 850 square meters. They mainly come from the holdings of the Bavarian National Museum , supplemented by loans. The majority of the total of 21 exhibition themes present handcrafted ceramics from their beginnings to the present day. In addition, tiles, faience and stoneware are shown.
