The castle crest earlier in the Middle Ages Chambe called, is a Outbound Höhenburg (needle seat) in the town of Ortenburg. It is the former headquarters of the noble free von Kamm , who later became the Counts of Hals . The castle complex was either on a hill above the village of Kamm near Ortenburg or in nearby Söldenau .
history
The noble free von Chambe once came with Ulrich von Passau from the Nordgau to Eastern Bavaria during the investiture dispute . Often they appeared as his subordinate. They settled in the Wolfach Valley and built the Kamm Castle. At the beginning of the 12th century they are named for the first time after the castle complex.
The reason on which the complex was built was based on high estates from Passau. Therefore, after the childless death of Walchun von Chambe in 1222 , the Passau bishopric also had ownership claims to Kamm. However, it seems as if the bishopric was unable to enforce these claims and instead the inheritance went to Walchun's nephew, the Counts of Hals . In 1248 Burkhard von Weiher, the guardian of Count von Hals, who was not yet of legal age, was found at the castle.
In 1291, Count Albert von Hals renounced Kamm Castle and its accessories and the possessions around Kamm, St. Philipp (today's Söldenau ), Holzkirchen and Isarhofen in favor of his granddaughter Kunigunde, the wife of Rapotos IV von Ortenburg . After this donation, the complex seems to have lost its importance. The reason for this may have been the two castle complexes already inhabited by the Counts of Ortenburg in today's districts of Vorderschloss and Hinterschloss.
Location question
For a long time it was assumed that Kamm Castle would be identical to Neu-Ortenburg Castle due to its proximity to Alt-Ortenburg Castle , the ancestral castle of the Counts of Ortenburg . In March 2011, the Ortenburg Castle Area Promotion Group initiated a 3D measurement of the former Ortenburg Castle complex and the Kamm area. No evidence of a possible location of a castle complex was found above the Kamm district. However, near the former count's shooting range of Alt-Ortenburg Castle, at the top of the hill tongue, larger soil structures were found. This could be the actual location of the castle. However, this could also be a terraced former baroque garden. Archaeological excavations would have to be carried out to clarify this location. Another possibility for a location would be if Burg Kamm were to be a Niederungsburg. Due to the temporal appearance of Söldenau Castle, Kamm Castle could also be a predecessor of the former moated castle on the Wolfach .
