Snow golf is a variant of golf that is not played on grass, but on snow and ice surfaces. The greens are called whites here, as they consist of an ice surface that is specially prepared for this. Accordingly, the balls are not white, but green or red.

Similar to the Golf, which is Dutch Kolf (also colf ) often regarded as "archetype" of snow golf. Kolf as a popular winter sport on frozen canals is documented as early as the 17th century, including paintings by Aert van der Neer and Hendrick Avercamp . The British writer and Nobel Prize winner Rudyard Kipling is named as the inventor of "modern" snow golf . Kipling wrote his famous jungle book in cold New England (USA) around the turn of the century and relaxed with his beloved golf training, even though the snow did not allow normal golf.

World championships

World championships are held by two organizers in snow golf and ice golf. The Snow Golf World Cup has been designed as an international benefit event since 2007, in which numerous celebrities take part. It is funded as a tourism policy measure by the State of Salzburg. The Ice Golf World Cup has been held annually since 1999 on the world's northernmost golf course on the sea ice off Uummannaq ( Greenland ) and is very weather-dependent due to the nature of the ice. Participants must have a handicap of 36 or less. Due to the extreme temperatures, the use of clubs with a graphite shaft is not recommended. From 2007 to 2010 the Ice Golf World Championships could not be held because the winter was too warm.
