Obertauern is a winter sports resort with market rights in the Austrian state of Salzburg . The place in the Radstädter Tauern is not a separate municipality, but is spread over the municipal areas of Untertauern and Tweng . Obertauern is one of the most popular winter sports locations in Austria with a wide range of slopes for skiers, snowboarders and cross-country skiers.

geography

Obertauern is located in the south-east of the state of Salzburg in the Radstädter Tauern between 1639 and 2526 meters above sea level. The place is located around the top of the Radstädter Tauern Pass , over which the Katschberg Straße (B99) leads.

Obertauern belongs to the two districts of St. Johann im Pongau and Tamsweg , so Obertauern is divided into two regions: Pongau and Lungau . The settlement area of Obertauern is divided between the communities of Untertauern (Pongau) and Tweng (Lungau). The municipal boundary runs on the top of the pass and thus right through the village.

history

Celts and Romans

The area around Obertauern was probably already settled in the time of the Celts (4th – 1st century BC). A Roman state road also led over the Tauern Pass ( in Alpe ) to Juvavum (Salzburg). Traces of wagon tracks that can be traced back to the Romans have also been found on this road . Finds of old milestones testify to the Romans who moved over the Tauernpasshöhe. This expansion of the road probably goes back to Emperor Claudius (41–54).

Middle Ages and Modern Times

The first reliable mention of the Radstädter Tauern took place only in 1207, and in 1224 a small church on the Tauernscharte was mentioned. In 1517 there was a report of "two landlords on the Tauern", which meant the Schaidberg and Wisenegg houses that still exist today . The road was expanded for car traffic in 1519. Under Archbishop Sigismund von Schrattenbach , the Untertauern post office was opened in 1764; mail trips were increased to twice a week, in 1870 to four times a week and in 1895 to twice a day. From the 17th century until shortly after the First World War, silver and copper were mined, the Seekarhütte (today a top-class hotel) was the accommodation of the miners. In 1902 the first skiers were mentioned on the Tauern.

20th century until today

After the First World War , the first skiers came to Obertauern on foot in 1920. The Tauern races for cars and motorcycles took place for the first time from 1925 to 1927 and attracted a large number of visitors. The “birthday” of Obertauern is dated by the residents to December 8th, 1929, as it was on this day that the scheduled winter traffic over the Tauern Pass began for the first time.

The road and avalanche barriers were expanded from 1950 (1954 asphalting, 1955 construction of the Roman bridge). The expansion of the hotel village Obertauern began in 1952.

In 1962 "Obertauern" became the official place name.

At this time, the “Schifahrende Volksschule” was known, where, in addition to the regular morning schedule, skiing was on the curriculum in the afternoon.

In 1965 the Beatles produced part of their film Help in Obertauern. On this occasion they gave their only concert in Austria as part of a private event in the Hotel Marietta.

Shortly before the Beatles came (in March), an avalanche between Untertauern and Obertauern tore a bus with over 30 passengers into the depths. 14 Scandinavian youths are killed.

In December 1999, the German Christian Flühr set the marathon ski world record in Obertauern with just under 3 days (68:23 h) on skis non-stop, which corresponds to the distance traveled from America to Europe. One season later in February 2001, Flühr started again at the Tauern Pass and set another world record with more than 4 days of non-stop skiing (103: 21 h).

A Red Bull Snow Kayak Race was held here on March 28, 2009 . In the 2013/14 winter season, three episodes of the television program ZDF-Fernsehgarten were recorded on the Gnadenalm .

Culture and sights

  • Tauern cemetery : At the summit of the Radstadt Tauern there is a graveyard of the homeless . This name comes from the time when people with poor equipment wanted to cross the Tauern Pass on foot, often in bad weather, and were killed in the process. Most of these people could not be identified and were then buried without a name. Today it is the cemetery for the locals of the resulting ski resort Obertauern.

economy

Since Obertauern began to develop as a winter sports resort at the beginning of the 20th century, the expansion of the corresponding sports facilities was of particular importance.

In 1948 the first ascent aid was installed at the Seekarhaus; until after 1960 the piste was still used by the skiers themselves against free runs. From 1952 a number of other cable cars and surface lifts were installed, including the first plate surface lifts .

In 1961 a cable car was put into operation on the Zehnerkar . In 1963 Austria's first motorized snowcat was used in the village. From 1967, the piste was built with caterpillars. In the process, drastic changes to the terrain were made to make the slopes easier for the piste machines and, above all, for wider tourist groups. By connecting a few lifts, a preliminary stage of today's “Tauernrunde” came about in 1969.

The first snow-making system went into operation in 1985, and in the years that followed, numerous tow lifts were replaced by chairlifts.

From 1991 to 1998 there were further modernizations, such as the construction of a floodlight system and the introduction of the contactless ski pass system .

The Obertauern Lift Association (LGO) is responsible for the lifts.

electricity and water

In the 1950s there was still no electrical line leading to Obertauern. The houses were connected to a small, diesel generator-operated electricity company owned by the state fire damage insurance company. To improve the situation, the Obertauern lighting cooperative was founded on July 10, 1957, which initiated the construction of a new system that went into operation in 1958. There were similar circumstances with the drinking water supply. On July 22, 1957, a waterworks cooperative was founded, which was able to open a new supply system on July 7, 1960. These improvements in the infrastructure are seen as a prerequisite for the expansion of Obertauern into today's tourist area.

telecommunications

There is a telecommunication relay in Obertauern . Since no direct radio link to the telecommunications tower on the Roßbrand is possible, there is a 38 meter high steel tower with a radio relay mirror on the top of the plate .

tourism

Gamsleiten 2 - the steepest slope in Obertauern

With around 950,000 overnight stays per year, 95% of which in winter, and around 9,000 guest beds, Obertauern is an important tourist area and ranks sixth in Austrian tourism statistics for overnight stays in the winter half-year (as of 2011).

The skiing is the most common sports activity in Obertauern, besides also is snowboarding popular. The ski area comprises around 100 km of groomed slopes and 26 lifts, which can transport 48,000 to 49,000 people per hour. As is common elsewhere, the slopes are marked with colors that indicate the level of difficulty. Blue (61%) for easy slope conditions, red (35%) for medium and black (4%) for difficult sections of the slope, whereby the slope along the Gamsleiten 2 chairlift is the second steepest slope in Austria.

An ascent for non-skiers is possible with any chairlift or gondola lift . You can only descend with the Zehnerkarbahn, the Plattenkarbahn and the Grünwaldkopfbahn. With a sloping length of 992 meters, the latter overcomes a vertical height of 305 meters and can transport a maximum of 3,502 people per hour. For day skiers there is 24,000 m² of parking space near the slopes.

Since the lifts are built around the village, there is the possibility of a so-called Tauern circuit, which you can drive clockwise against the (green signs) as well as with the (red signs) . Ski bridges were built to cross Katschbergstrasse (B99). The Tauern circuit can be started at any lift and ends at the starting point.

For cross-country skiers there are more than 26 km of prepared cross-country ski trails , a large part of which is located on the Gnadenalm, where there is also a toboggan run in winter .

Obertauern issues a ski pass that has also been valid for the Großeck - Speiereck ski area 15 km away since the 2012/13 season . In addition, the area can be used with the Lungo ski pass ( Obertauern - Lungau - Katschberg ski region ) and the Salzburg Super Ski Card (Salzburger Land), but not with the ski pass of the Ski amadé network .

Summer tourism is of secondary importance in Obertauern. The place is the starting point for hikes along the Central Alpine Trail ; the Oberhütte in the direction of Styria and the Südwiener Hütte in the direction of Flachau can each be reached in a 2-hour walk. Furthermore, a motorcycle meeting takes place in Obertauern every year in August and September. Nevertheless, a number of hotels and shops have closed in the summer season.
