The Gnadenalm , a high alpine pasture in the Salzburg district of St. Johann im Pongau , is halfway between the famous tourist resorts of Untertauern and Obertauern .

geography

The Gnadenalm is located in the south-east of Salzburg, on the north side of the Radstädter Tauern Pass . The mountain group around Obertauern is part of the Niedere Tauern . Beginning at an altitude of 1275 m, the valley floor extends over an area of approx. 400 ha. The entire area of the Gnadenalm is located in the Obertauern landscape protection area and a large part in the plant protection area.

history

The Gnadenalm was owned by the Archdiocese of Salzburg until the 17th century . In the 17th century, the then bishop bequeathed the Gnadenalm to larger farmers in the Taurach Valley. The Alm was divided into two parts, the Vordergnadenalm and the Hintergnadenalm. Four farmers were selected for the front and rear Gnadenalm. The pasture has always been used for livestock farming in summer. Until the 1980s, all of the milk was processed into butter and cheese on the alpine pastures. Today the milk is partly processed and partly delivered to milk cooperatives. The Weissenhofhütte on the Hintergnadenalm was already operated as a ski home in the 1920s and 1930s and was one of four accommodations for the first skiers in Obertauern. At the beginning of the Second World War, the Gnadenalm was only used for agricultural purposes. In the 1990s, a restaurant, the "Gnadenalm", opened in the area of the Vordergnadenalm. Since then, the Gnadenalm has developed into a very valuable tourist attraction for the Obertauern ski region, even in winter.

summer

In addition to its great tourist importance, the Gnadenalm is used in summer, as it has always been, for cattle and dairy farming . In summer the Alm is the starting point for numerous hikes such as B. to the Johannes waterfall and the Südwiener Hütte .
