history

In a document from the year 1517, two hosts on the Tauern are reported for the first time , who are supposed to keep the way over the Radstädter Tauern clear. At that time, however, the Tauernweg was poorly cleared and partly dilapidated, which is why there were several complaints. The road was not expanded until 1519/20; the maintenance of the road was subsequently entrusted to the Salzburg Cathedral Chapter .

With the two hosts the Tauernhaus Schaidberg and the Tauernhaus Wisenegg were meant. The two Tauern houses were under the rule of the Salzburg cathedral chapter. Around 1550, the Tauernhaus Schaidberg was also mentioned as “Not Taferne” in a document, which at that time was not heavily frequented either in summer or in winter. The assumption is therefore that the Tauernhaus was originally a farm that only gradually took on the function of a Tauernhaus.

The owners of the property could have been a Radstadt bourgeois family, as Conrad Schaidberger was Mayor of Radstadt in 1489. Historical researchers suspect that the Tauernhaus Schaidberg was the ancestral home of the Schaidberger family. In 1541 the property was owned by Georgius Aschauer, followed by Stoff Unterberger and Ehrystanus Prembstaller. In 1629 the property moved into the possession of the Wisenegger family, in 1924 it became part of the Tweng postal property.

During its existence, the Tauernhaus Schaidberg has repeatedly received funding from the Archbishop of Salzburg for looking after destitute travelers. Since the Salzburg Cathedral Chapter itself took care of the road maintenance from the 16th century, these funds were reduced but apparently never completely stopped at first. Only in the first half of the 19th century no more funds seem to have been paid out for the care of poor travelers, but requests from the two Tauern hosts from the end of the 19th century, asking for funds to care for poor travelers, are documented. These applications were generally approved with 60 guilders. As a result, the Tauernhaus Schaidberg was a center for looking after destitute travelers.

After Johann Angelberger bought the Tauernhaus in 1925, he went bankrupt and Anton Sandbichler auctioned the Tauernhaus in 1927. However, the building was completely destroyed in a devastating fire in 1932. Sandbichler, post host in Tweng, was not financially able to rebuild the building, which is why the reasons fell to the lawyer Viktor Wimmer and Sandbichler's tenant Franz Wirnsperger each half in a renewed auction. The Tauernhaus was rebuilt as a hotel by the new owners and sold in 1959. In 1965 it was acquired by the Salzburg Youth Holiday Association, now Young Austria, and converted into a youth hostel.
