Neukirchen am Großvenediger is an Austrian market town in the Zell am See (Pinzgau) district, Salzburger Land with 2593 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020). It is located in the Oberpinzgau region , about 16.5 kilometers from its main town Mittersill and 44 kilometers from the district capital Zell am See and belongs to the Hohe Tauern national park communities .

The center of Neukirchen am Großvenediger is located at an altitude of 858 meters at the foot of the Wildkogel in the upper Salzach Valley, on the left - northern, sunny - bank of the Salzach . The tributaries of the Salzach come from the north, coming from the Kitzbühel Alps , the Trattenbach and the Dürnbach , coming from the south, in the Hohe Tauern, the Obersulzbach and the Untersulzbach . With 165 km² Neukirchen is the fourth largest municipality in the Zell am See district. In the west the Trattenbach separates Neukirchen from Wald im Pinzgau , in the north the Kitzbühel Alps form a natural border with the two Tyrolean communities Westendorf and Kirchberg in Tirol in the district of Kitzbühel . The eastern border runs from the Wildkogel into the Hohe Tauern to the community Bramberg . That part of the municipality, which is located in the Hohe Tauern, includes the two Tauern valleys, Untersulzbachtal and Obersulzbachtal , with the Großvenediger ( 3657 m ) also the highest mountain in the state . The borders with the neighboring communities of Prägraten am Großvenediger and Matrei in East Tyrol in the district of Lienz , Tir are also in the Tauern . as well as to the municipality of Krimml .

The community consists of the cadastral communities Neukirchen, Rosental and Sulzau.
The citizenship and registry office association Neukirchen am Großvenediger is also responsible for the two neighboring communities of Wald im Pinzgau and Krimml.
Neukirchen was part of the Mittersill judicial district until 2002 and has been part of the Zell am See judicial district since 2003 .
Together with eight other Oberpinzgau communities, Neukirchen forms the Oberpinzgau regional association.
The municipality is, together with the other Oberpinzgau municipalities between Krimml and Hollersbach , part of the Oberpinzgau West cleanliness association, which is responsible for the infrastructure regarding sewerage and the proper disposal of waste water from the region.
In elections to the Austrian National Council (Austria), the three electoral districts of the market town of Neukirchen am Großvenediger belong to the regional constituency of Lungau / Pinzgau / Pongau (5c) and the regional constituency of Salzburg . In the Salzburg state elections for the Zell am See electoral district (6).

history
- Origin of the place name
It is said that originally there was a place called Mitterdorf in today's Dürnbachau, which would have been destroyed by a flood of the Dürnbach. A new village with a new church was therefore built further east in a protected location, which is why it was called Neukirchen.

A cable car leads up to the Wildkogel at an altitude of almost 2100 meters. There are good hiking opportunities here in the summer months. In the winter months there is a wide range of winter sports. The southern thalers from Neukirchen are also easy to hike. Crystals can be admired in Obersulzbachtal / Hopffeldboden ( ⊙ ) or the Blausee ( ⊙ ) at the entrance to the valley .

- Rail: The Pinzgauer Lokalbahn (formerly Pinzgaubahn , also Krimmler Bahn ) is a narrow-gauge railway with a gauge of 760 millimeters ( Bosnian gauge ) in the Austrian state of Salzburg . The former ÖBB line , which has been owned by the State of Salzburg since July 1, 2008 , is operated by Salzburg AG under the name SLB Pinzgauer Lokalbahn . It runs almost 53 kilometers in length in the valley of the Salzach between Zell am See and Vorderkrimml through the high mountain region of the Salzburg Pinzgau .
- Bus: The Postbus 670 stops in the center of Neukirchen.
- Street: Gerlos Straße (B165) is also led around the town.
