Hochneukirchen Castle
Hochneukirchen Castle , also called Hohenneukirchen , is located in the municipality of Neukirchen am Großvenediger (Schlossgasse 2) in the Zell am See district in Pinzgau in the state of Salzburg near the Wisbach Gorge.
history
The castle was the ancestral seat of the Lords of Neukirchen, who in turn were followers of the Counts of Mittersill. Herwich and Penno von Neukirchen are mentioned as early as 1126. Most of the castle was built in the 13th century. In 1811, during renovation work in the former Great Hall on the first floor, the year 1247 was found. Walter and Jakob von Neukirchen are known from that time. The lords of Neukirchen received part of the Hieburg as a residence until 1297 and were able to expand their influence over large parts of the Oberpinzgau. Significant members of this family were Konrad von Neukirchen (around 1400) as the caretaker of Mittersill and Balthasar von Neukirchen, the caretaker of Taxenbach . The last of this family was the childless deceased Georg von Neukirchen († 1547), who unsuccessfully tried to defend Mittersill Castle against the rebellious farmers.
In 1558 the entire property of the Lords of Neukirchen was sold by the widow of Georg and their nieces to Erasmus and Christoph von Kuenburg , who also acquired the rule of Hieburg. The property is converted into a family entrustment commission that existed until 1811 . In 1850 the Kuenburg heirs sold the castle to Mr. Linden from London . However, this turned out to be an impostor; The Salzburg merchants Duregger, Trauner and Saulich acquired the castle from its bankruptcy estate. In 1877 the Neukirchen community bought the castle for the poor fund and set up a retirement home here. In 1889 it came under the direction of the Hallein school sisters and was converted into a hospital, poor and supply house. In 1958, the Neukirchen community acquired the castle and converted it into a retirement home.
Building history and Hochneukirchen Castle today
The castle dates at least from the 13th century. The building was threatened again and again by the Wisbach and the castle rock was even washed away. In 1627 extensive construction work had to be carried out to secure the castle. The foundation walls were underpinned, the wall holes closed, the windows and floors renewed and the roof re-covered. The old cattle wall was removed by ten factory shoes and rebuilt lower. A small tower was built at each corner of the valley. In 1645 a water pipe was built. In 1691 security work was necessary again due to the settlement of the walls. In 1722 the stable and threshing floor were rebuilt. Before 1800 it is reported that only part of the castle is habitable; the chapel and large parts of the walls, including the brewery, collapsed. In 1817 a flat roof was put on as a makeshift.
The castle has an almost square floor plan. Narrow extensions are added to the southwest and southeast corner. The height of the castle and the retaining wall are probably from the older castle, as is the entrance, which can be reached via an outside staircase, above which there is a simple rectangular bay window. The interior of the castle has been changed several times by adapting it to a hospital or an old people's home.
