Sulzau is a place in Oberpinzgau in Salzburg , and a place and cadastral municipality of the municipality of Neukirchen am Großvenediger in the Zell am See district .

geography

The place Sulzau lies between Neukirchen and Wald im Pinzgau on the southern ( right ) bank of the Salzach , about 2 kilometers southwest (into the valley) of Neukirchen. Here the Rosental basin opens up as a valley widening, between the debris cones of the Neukirchner Dürnbach and the Walder Trattenbach , which come from the north into the Salzach Valley . The valley takes in Obersulzbach and Untersulzbach from the south , and forms an alluvial plain on about 2 × 2 km on both sides of the Salzach.
The place is a small hamlet and lies on the slightly elevated sediment tongue between Ober- and Untersulzbach, which offers certain flood protection.

The village ( Dispersed Houses Sulzau ) comprises about 120 buildings with about 320 inhabitants. As is often the case in the Alps, the locality and cadastral area is extensive and extends almost 20 km south to the main Alpine ridge . It has over 130 km², so it is 13 the size of the federal state of Vienna , and makes up most of the Neukirchen area (166 km²). The area includes both Obersulzbachtal and Untersulzbachtal (scattered houses or individual locations, both valleys not permanently populated), as well as all localities in the Salzach Valley south of the river. These are - out of the valley - Scheffau (Ober-, Unter-Scheffau), Sulzau, Hollis (with Gasthof Siggen ) at the valley entrance of the Obersulzbachtal, Gasthof Schiedhof at the valley entrance of the Untersulzbachtal, Tratten with Schwabreit and Polln-Tratten a bit higher, Einöd already opposite Neukirchen , Ascham ( Ober-Ascham and Premisbauer ) am Aschbach, Bärngarten , and Kohlhäusl , near Schönbach (municipality of Bramberg am Wildkogel ) on the municipality border.

The highest peak in the cadastral area is the Großvenediger  ( 3657  m above sea level ).
Neighboring valleys of the Sulzbach valleys, in the series of the Tauern valleys , are Krimmler Achental in the west and Habach valley in the east.

The valley floor of the Upper Salzach was a dreaded swampy landscape until the middle of the 19th century, as the name Sulzau describes , zu Sulz, Sülze , 'gelatinous, moory soil' and floodplain .

The Pinzgaubahn was built by 1898 . The Sulzbachtäler stop is near Sulzau (other side of the Salzach) .
