The Untersulzbachtal is a right, north-northwest running side valley to the Salzach im Pinzgau ( State of Salzburg , Austria ). It belongs to the cadastral community Sulzau (community Neukirchen) , is completely uninhabited and of particular scenic beauty.

Location and landscape

After the Krimmler Achental and Obersulzbachtal, the Untersulzbachtal is the third of the Tauern valleys that sweep south into the main Alpine ridge.

The Untersulzbachtal has a length of about 12 km. It is a typical glacial trough valley with relatively steep valley flanks (trough walls) notched by rockfall channels. The valley is wooded and narrow, from the Stockeralpe ( 1265  m above sea level ) it becomes high alpine , due to the Untersulzbachkees , whose glacier tongue ( 2073  m above sea level ) from the Großvenediger ( 3657  m above sea level ) and the Hohen Fürleg ( 3243  m above sea level ) flows down. The valley is almost pathless, wild and dominated by the Kleinvenediger .

The Untersulzbach flows into the Salzach between Neukirchen am Großvenediger and Rosenthal , in whose broad valley floor the Sulzbachtal opens seamlessly. Above the dam at 1022  m above sea level. A. is the once very famous Knappenwand, today there is a show mine (copper mine).

The (Unter-) Sulzbachfall is a waterfall in the lower part of the valley, which is already visible from the wide Salzach valley. A hiking trail leads to viewpoints close to the waterfall.

At the end of the valley, the Zwischenensulzbachtaltörl forms the transition from the Obersulzbachkees to the Kürsingerhütte (rearmost Obersulzbachtal ), the Untersulzbachtaltörl on the Vilhabenkees below the Kleinvenediger towards the Neuer Prager Hütte , over the main Alpine ridge into the Tauerntal ( Felber Tauern ).

Nature conservation: Inner Untersulzbachtal special protection area

Border of the special protection area

The Inner Untersulzbachtal is located in the Hohe Tauern National Park and is a special protection area according to Section 22 of the Salzburg National Park Act . It was determined as such in 1996.

It extends - with the exception of the Ascham-Alm at the head of the valley - from Breitfuß and Oberen Wartfuß in the valley to Fürleg , Keeskogel and Untersulzbachtaltörl, and at an altitude of around 1700 m to 3243 m (Fürleg). All stages of development of the individual plant communities , from the subalpine coniferous forest level to the nival level, can be identified in a natural sequence.

The former property of the Association of Nature Conservation Park, the national park pioneer, in the Unter- and Obersulzbachtal , which the State of Salzburg acquired in 2016, is to become a wilderness area.

As from the Obersulzbachtal, the chief forester Paul Rohrgger attempted the first ascent of the Großvenediger through the Untersulzbachtal in 1828 , but only got into the Veniceerscharte.

Furthermore, the Bettlersteig connects this valley with the Obersulzbachtal.
