Niedernsill is a municipality with 2736 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Salzburger Land in the Zell am See district in Austria and is located on the lower border of the Upper Pinzgau .
geography
The municipality is bounded in the north by the slopes of the Kitzbühel Alps , in the south the Hohe Tauern mountain range runs in a west-east direction . The Salzach , which shapes and shapes the landscape and drains the entire Oberpinzgau, flows in the valley. In addition to the structures recorded in the biotope mapping, the protected areas of Lucia Lacke and the Hutterwald natural forest reserve are located in the municipality.

Population development
history
- Place name
The name Niedernsill comes from Nidrinseli and consists of the original Nidrin for 'lowest' and seli for 'settlement': Niedernsill is the first town in Oberpinzgau (apart from Piesendorf and Kaprun, which traditionally belong to the Zell area).
- Avalanche accident on March 28, 2000
On March 28, 2000, a serious avalanche accident occurred in undeveloped alpine terrain between the Kitzsteinhorn and the Mühlbachtal at an altitude of around 2,500 meters, in which a total of 12 people, mostly ski instructors in training, were killed. It was the most momentous avalanche in the recent history of the Pinzgau.
