Hopfgarten in Defereggen is a municipality with 691 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Lienz district in Tyrol , Austria . The community is located in the judicial district of Lienz .

Geographical location

Hopfgarten is located at the entrance to the Defereggental , which branches off from the Iseltal and is traversed by the Schwarzach . The municipality includes the steep slopes of the Lasörling Group in the north and the gentler slopes of the Villgraten Mountains in the south . With an area of ​​73.17 km², Hopfgarten is the ninth largest municipality of the 33 municipalities in the Lienz district. The main town and the district of Dölach are in the valley, besides the settlement extends over several hamlets and farms above the valley on the sunny side. The lowest point in the community is at around 870  m above sea level. A. in the area of ​​the Schwarzachklamm, the highest peak is the Regenstein with 2891  m above sea level. A. The municipality of Hopfgarten in Defereggen consists of a cadastral municipality that bears the name "Hopfgarten". If you enter the municipality in the east at the Schwarzachklamm, you first reach the village of Dölach on Defereggentalstraße . Dölach is divided into the scattered settlement Dölach-Schattseite, 980  m above sea level, south of the Schwarzach . In 2001, Ratzell housed 9 buildings and 25 residents. The main town of the municipality is the village of Hopfgarten in Defereggen to the west of Dölach, 1107  m above sea level. The Bloshütte , the Gagenalm, the Glaurithütte, the Kloitzalm, the Moosalm, the Ranigesalm, the Zirbenalm and the Zwenewaldalm are also included in Hopfgarten . The village of Hopfgarten is in turn divided into the “Dorf” district around the parish church as well as the Ausserhopfgarten district to the east and the Innerhopfgarten district to the west of the village. All other settlements in the community are located above the valley on the sunny side north of the Schwarzach. If you follow the municipal road that branches off from the village to the north or then to the west, you first reach the Rotte Rajach ( 1368  m above sea level ), which in 2001 had 13 buildings and 53 residents. This is followed in the west by the hamlet of Hof ( 1459  m above sea level ) with 21 buildings or 94 inhabitants and the Rotte Lerch ( 1499  m above sea level ) with 11 buildings and 58 inhabitants. If you follow the Defereggentalstraße in the valley of the Schwarzach further west, you will reach the scattered settlement Plon ( 1140  m above sea level ) south of Lerch . In the south of the municipality, Hopfgarten also has a share in the Villgraten mountains . The Rudnig ( 2429  m above sea level ), the Mauskopf ( 2477  m above sea level ), the Hohe Stierbichl ( 2620  m above sea level ) and the Schneidegg ( 2755  m above sea level ) can be found here on the municipal border with St. Johann im Walde m above sea level ). At the Schneidegg, the municipality of Schlaiten also joins the municipality of Hopfgarten, with the Greinspitze ( 2747  m above sea level ) and the Bockstein ( 2805  m above sea level ) on the border to Schlaiten . In 2012 there were 765 people in the community of Hopfgarten. In terms of population, Hopfgarten was the eleventh smallest municipality in the Lienz district at that time. According to the 2001 census, 99.3% of the population were Austrian citizens (Tyrol: 90.6%); by the beginning of 2012 the value had only dropped insignificantly to 97.9%. 3.4% of the population were born abroad in 2012, almost all of which came from EU member states . In 2001 97.6% of the population (Tyrol: 83.4%) professed to be part of the Roman Catholic Church , only 0.2% had no religious beliefs, 0.5% were Protestant .

The average age of the community population in 2001 deviated more strongly from the national average in all age groups. 21.2% of the residents of Hopfgarten were younger than 15 years (Tyrol: 18.4%), 55.7% between 15 and 59 years old (Tyrol: 63.0%). The proportion of residents over 59 years of age was 23.1%, above the national average of 18.6%. As a result, the average age of the population of Hopfgarten rose significantly. The proportion of people under the age of 15 fell to 13.6% as of January 1, 2012, while the proportion of people between the ages of 15 and 59 rose to 62.6%. The proportion of people over 59 also rose to 23.8%. According to marital status, 52.7% of the residents of Hopfgarten were single, 41.7% married, 4.8% widowed and 0.8% divorced.

Population development

Since the late 19th century, the population of Hopfgarten has developed much more slowly than the population growth of Tyrol or the Lienz district. The population fell by 22% between 1869 and 1923 and marked a low in 1923 with 653 people. Then the population of Hopfgarten began to increase again. The population has been falling continuously since 1981. Although the birth balance was always positive in the three decades from 1981 to 2011, the extremely negative balance of migration during this period led to a sharp decline in population.

Workplaces and employees

The census of workplaces carried out as part of the census in 2001 in Hopfgarten showed 32 workplaces with 97 employees (excluding agriculture), 79% of which were employees. The number of workplaces remained unchanged compared to 1991, the number of employees even decreased by 2 people (2%). The most important branch of the economy in 2001 was the production of goods with eight companies and 22 employees (23% of the employees in the municipality), followed by trade with two workplaces and 13 employees (13% of the employees) as well as the hotel and restaurant sector and energy and water supply with five or two companies and 12 employees each (12% of employees each). Of the 307 employed residents of Hopfgarten, only 93 people were employed in the municipality in 2001. 214 had to commute to work. Of the out-commuters, 50% had their place of work in the nearby urban center of Lienz. Another 30% had found a job in the rest of the district, another 12 or 6% commuted to North Tyrol or another federal state, seven of the residents had to commute abroad.

In comparison, tourism is slightly above the average in the Lienz district, but it is much less intense than in the neighboring municipality of Matrei in East Tyrol or the rest of the Defereggental. The municipality was able to count around 37,000 overnight stays in the 2011/12 tourism year. Since the turn of the millennium, Hopfgarten has recorded strong increases in overnight stays for both the winter and summer seasons. The overnight stays in the summer season between 2000 and 2012 rose from 14,202 to 20,849 overnight stays, in the winter season between 1999/2000 and 2011/12 from 7,669 to 16,512 overnight stays, a total of 51% within this period. Of the 20,849 overnight stays in summer 2012, 47% were made by Austrians, significantly more than the average for the district. Furthermore, Germans accounted for 37% of the overnight stays and Italians for 6% of the overnight stays. A four-star and a three-star hotel as well as various inns, guest houses, holiday apartments and private room renters are available to guests in the community. Like all other East Tyrolean municipalities, the municipality belongs to the East Tyrol Tourist Association, with Hopfgarten being organized in the "Defereggental Holiday Region". The responsible tourist office is located in St. Jakob.

Transport and infrastructure

Hopfgarten is accessed via the Defereggentalstraße (L25), which crosses the entire Defereggental and leads from Huben to the Staller Sattel . This state road connects Hopfgarten with the neighboring communities of Matrei and St. Veit; in Huben, Defereggentalstraße joins the Felbertauern Straße, which is important for regional and supra-regional traffic . From the center of the village of Hopfgarten, the 2.2 km long Rajachstraße (L74) leads to the district Rajach, whereby the street is extended by a local road to the district Lerch. Hopfgarten is connected to the public transport network by buses operated by ÖBB-Postbus GmbH . The 963 line connects Hopfgarten to Huben several times on weekdays, whereby in Huben you can change to the Postbus routes towards Matrei or Lienz. Furthermore, there is the possibility of reaching the neighboring communities by means of a collective call taxi . Line 963 runs from Huben to St. Jakob and has eight stops in the municipality of Hopfgarten, but only in the valley area on Defereggentalstrasse. The closest connection to the Drautalbahn railway network is in Lienz.

The wastewater from the community of Hopfgarten is treated in the sewage treatment plant of the Hohe Tauern Süd wastewater association in Huben, which Hopfgarten joined in 1999. With construction phase 01, the wastewater from the districts of Ausserhopfgarten, Hopfgarten-Zentrum and Innerhopfgarten was disposed of; subsequently, with construction phase 02 in 2001, the sewage system of the districts of Feld, Lerch and Rajach was developed for wastewater technology. In 2002, 78% of the 205 objects producing wastewater were connected to the sewer network or the sewage treatment plant. The waste that arises in the community is disposed of by the Waste Management Association of East Tyrol (AWVO).

education

At the end of the 18th century, school lessons in Hopfgarten still took place in a farmhouse parlor (Steßler), later the lessons moved to a room in the newly built parsonage. It was not until 1898 that the children were taught in their own school house in the center of Hopfgarten. In 1987 the new school building was opened at Fischerfleck. The elementary school was only run as a single class in the 2012/13 school year. Until 2013, the district of Hof also had its own elementary school, which existed from 1891. Previously, lessons had also been held here in farm rooms. In 1912 the company moved into a school in Hof for the first time; the last school building was opened in 1964. After only eight children from the three groups Rajach, Hof and Lerch attended the one-class school, the school was closed at the end of the school year 2012/13 at the request of the municipality. The children will in future be taught in the Hopfgarten elementary school. The community also has a kindergarten, which is open on school days in the mornings, and a public library. To attend the secondary school, the children of Hopfgarten are locked in the secondary school in Matrei, the closest grammar school is in Lienz. Music lessons are organized by the Matrei-Iseltal State Music School.

Security and Healthcare

With regard to health care, Hopfgarten is organized together with the communities of St. Jakob, St. Veit and Kals am Großglockner in the "Defereggental-Kals social district". In the health district, for example, health services such as home nursing, care help, home help and domestic help are organized. From a police point of view, the Matrei Police Department is responsible for the municipality.
