The Felbertauern Straße (also: Felbertauernstraße ) is an approximately (formerly) 63.7 kilometer long, year-round road connection within Austria between Mittersill in the state of Salzburg and Matrei in East Tyrol through the Felbertauern tunnel and then on as the B 108 to Lienz . The B in the numbering of the street indicates that it is a former federal highway, which was rededicated to a federal highway B by law in 2002 . The 36.3 km long route from Mittersill to Matrei is also known as the Felbertauern toll road , as it is a private road owned by Felbertauernstraße AG . This piece was built in 1967. The designation P1 - from Privatstrasse - for Felbertauernstrasse is only an internal one of Felbertauernstrasse AG, but is occasionally also used outside of it. In addition to the toll booth at the southern tunnel portal, there is a Felbertauern Museum on the history of this Alpine crossing and the development of the road, which is open from Thursday to Sunday during the school summer holidays.

Traffic significance and course

The Felbertauernstraße begins at the Mittersill junction  ( 797  m above sea level ) with the Mittersiller Straße  (B 168) to Zell am See , Pass Thurn Straße  (B 161) to Kitzbühel and Sankt Johann in Tirol and Gerlos Straße  (B 165) into the Zillertal . The kilometers of the private toll road begin / end about 0.3 km south of the junction on the Salzach Bridge.

After the road in Mittersill crosses the Salzach over this bridge , it leads southwards for about 16.5 kilometers through the largely uninhabited Felbertal and a side valley, the Amertal . The north portal ( ) is still on the Salzburg side and at an altitude of 1607 m . The Felbertauern tunnel is 5.3 km long. The south portal of the tunnel at 1632 m and the toll station there are already on the East Tyrolean side ( ).

The southern ramp then leads through the Tauern valley to Matrei, where it flows into the Isel valley . The private part of the route also ends here and the B 108 begins, which continues to Lienz. There the road comes up to 678  m above sea level. A. in a roundabout onto Drautalstraße  (B 100).

This makes the road the most important connection between North Tyrol and the region of East Tyrol . The road is also an alternative north-south connection to the Tauern Autobahn / Tauern road tunnel , for loading cars on the Tauernbahn / Tauern tunnel Mallnitz – Böckstein or to the Grossglockner High Alpine Road . You have to pay a fee for using it , since 2009 also Mittersiller) is not required.

Up until the rock fall in 2013, the route led from the southern tunnel portal in a fairly straight line to the south, crossing a furrowed slope that sloped steeply to the west for the first 1.5 km. The new route, which was fully approved here on August 18, 2015, turns after the tunnel exit left curve in a first 180 ° hairpin right curve to run 500 m to the northwest. With the help of the hairpin bends, the road reduces height here on a slope that is less steep than before. The new route is around 1.5 km longer than the original, runs more west, but also remains east of the Tauernbach throughout. On August 18, 2015, Google Maps still shows both routes, but the new one not yet as a satellite photo.

history

From Iseltalstraße to the Felbertauern tunnel

The road is named after the Felber Tauern mountain pass , which already connected the Tauern valley with the Felbertal in Roman times . The Iselthalstraße between Lienz, Huben and Matrei was built from 1901 as a rival road. In Austrian legal language, competition refers to the joint financing of a project by various institutions, each of which assumes a percentage of the maintenance costs specified by law. In this case it took over

the planned construction costs of 99,000 guilders. In the years 1910 to 1912, the owner of Weißenstein Castle in Matrei had a drivable path built through the Prosseggklamm , which is considered to be the forerunner of the Felbertauernstraße. The Iseltal street belongs since April 1, 1948 the network of federal roads in Austria . Since 1971, this section of the route from Lienz to the beginning of the toll road has also been officially referred to as Felbertauern Straße . Even before the Felbertauern Aktiengesellschaft was founded on September 26, 1961, the first section of the newly built, 7.5 meter wide Felbertauernstrasse between St. Johann and Huben was opened on September 8, 1961. On June 23, 1962, construction work began with a groundbreaking ceremony. Anna Kranebitter, wife of National Councilor Franz Kranebitter , detonated the first explosive device on December 15, 1962 at the south portal of the tunnel and on June 14, 1963 also the first explosive device on the north portal. On April 11, 1964, then Federal Chancellor Josef Klaus was the first to cross the tunnel. On June 25, 1967, the Felbertauernstrasse was officially opened. It is the only inner-Austrian connection between North Tyrol and the geographic exclave of the East Tyrol region. Since border controls were abolished with the Schengen Agreement (controls abolished in 1997), however, the route via South Tyrol and the Brenner motorway has regained importance.

Rock fall on the south portal in 2013

Rock fall on the Felbertauern Straße
The tunnel south portal with the replacement road and the new route under construction

The Schildalmgalerie ( ) in the municipality of Matrei in East Tyrol was completely destroyed by a rock fall on May 14, 2013 . As a result, it was initially impossible to pass the Felbertauern tunnel. Public transport was resumed by the Verkehrsverbund Tirol with the bus route 4410 Lienz Hbf. - Kitzbühel Hbf. - return between May 21 and July 26, 2013 in two sub-branches, with the route between the tunnel south portal and the Matreier Tauernhaus had to be covered on foot (around 10% gradient). A replacement road between the Matreier Tauernhaus and the southern tunnel portal, which was built on June 17, 2013 and costing around 1.5 million euros, meant that traffic through the Felbertauern tunnel was provisionally reopened on July 27, 2013. However, the traffic on the replacement road was single-lane with traffic lights. In the summer of 2016, the traffic at the south portal was still diverted to a single lane, which led to considerable delays.

For safety reasons, the original Felbertauern Straße route could not be retained. At the beginning of March 2014, the orders for the new building were awarded. The work was carried out in three construction lots by a Lienz construction company and a bidding consortium of two companies from North Tyrol and Upper Austria. Construction work began on May 6, 2014, and the new line was opened on August 18, 2015. The costs for the new construction rose from 15 to 18 million euros due to problems with the construction work.

toll

The toll for using the private road is only collected when passing the south portal of the Felbertauern tunnel and therefore only for crossing it.

Those who were in possession of a valid annual ticket on May 14, 2013 were credited with 3 months of usage time due to the ban, according to Felbertauernstraße AG, which is promoting its route as a more cost-effective alternative to the Brenner and Tauern Autobahn. The Felbertauernstraße can be used without a motorway vignette.

In October 2013, ORF reported that a German motor vehicle driver has lodged a legal objection against the preferential treatment of locals - the criterion is the vehicle registration number "LZ" for the Lienz district.

On November 11, 2014, orf.at reported that the EU Commission warned the road operator to stop discriminating against non-locals (East Tyrolean cars drive free, Mittersiller at reduced rates). Karl Propeller, board member of Felbertauernstraße AG announces a new system for truck journeys. Instead of cheaper trips for regional freight forwarders, a discount system is to be introduced, the toll rules for this to be decided by the board in the week from November 17th. However, those responsible want to argue with the Commission as necessary and maintain the discounted tariffs for local cars.

Lock

Due to snow and the danger of avalanches, the road was closed (at least) on January 9th and shortly afterwards again from January 14th to (4:00 am) January 17th, 2019.

Blocking will be announced (as of January 2019) on the East Tyrolean side at the junction in Lienz and shortly before Matrei with boards. At the beginning of the private road there is an overhead neon sign and a guard in the car around the clock. This sometimes offers an information sheet on the alternative routes. In the case of navigation devices in vehicles, incorrect information can occur due to a lack of updates.

In the current winter that follows, Felbertauernstrasse will be closed from November 15 (afternoon) to expected November 22 (12 noon) 2019, most recently because a helicopter check for the risk of falling rocks was only possible in good weather after heavy snowfall. The B108 between Huben and Matrei was also closed until November 20 (3 p.m.) 2019, so that the connection from Lienz to Matrei was interrupted. On November 15, 2019 at 6.45 p.m., 19 blocks in the road network of East Tyrol and one block on the Sillian – Lienz railway line were in effect according to the district operations management of BH Lienz. Across Austria, on November 21, 2019, there were dozens of roadblocks in Tyrol, Carinthia, Salzburg and Styria after heavy snowfalls, which also triggered flooding.

B108  Like the other former federal highways, Felbertauern Strasse was part of the federal administration. Since April 1, 2002, it has been under state administration and continues to have the B in the number, but not the name Bundesstraße.
