The Aggsteiner road B 33 is a main road in Austria . The road accompanies the Danube through the Wachau between Melk and Mautern an der Donau . It offers a good view of the opposite bank, the sunny side with the beautiful vineyards. The street is named after the Aggstein castle ruins .

course

The B 33 runs over a length of 34.7 km along the southern bank of the Danube between Melk and Mautern an der Donau . The course of the road always follows the course of the river. At first it leads from the junction from the B 1  Wiener Straße near Melk along the western edge of the Dunkelsteinerwald before it leads to Mautern on its northern edge. At the Krems Süd junction, it joins the B 37  Kremser Straße

The section B 33a leads from Mautern over the Mauterner bridge of the Danube to Krems and joins the B 3  Donau Straße .

history

In 1837 the wood flooding company of the Weißenburg rulership had a road built from Melk to Mautern. Due to the solid construction, the road operator was allowed to demand a bridge toll of two cruisers for each draft animal on the newly built Pielach Bridge from July 1, 1837.

After the annexation of Austria , this road was converted into a first order road on April 1, 1940 as part of the standardization of the road system and designated as LIO 41. On March 23, 1942, it became part of Reichsstraße 343 , which led from Melk via Znaim to Pohrlitz , by a decree of the General Inspector for German Roads .

The Wachau road on the southern bank of the Danube heard since 1 January 1949 to the network of federal roads in Austria . By federal law of June 3, 1964, the name of this street was changed to Aggsteiner Straße .
