The Wiener Gürtel Straße (B221), according to the traffic law spelling, is a main street B in Vienna and a former federal highway.

It runs from the Gürtel bridge to the stadium bridge and includes not only the belt that gives it its name , but also a small part of Landstraßer Hauptstraße and the adjoining Schlachthausgasse.

As part of the Austria-wide street numbering , the Vienna Belt has the number B 221. As part of the Federal Road Transfer Act, this road was transferred to the state administration in 2002 like all federal roads at that time.

meaning

The belt, as it is called in Vienna for the sake of simplicity, historically separates the former suburbs of Vienna, which were incorporated in 1850, within the belt from the former suburbs outside, which were incorporated in 1890/92.

Around its course was once the line wall , a fortification that was named after the consumption tax lines. These lines separated the consumption tax area within the present-day belt from the areas not subject to this tax outside the belt.

In the course of the history of this street, numerous changes have occurred in terms of settlement and traffic use. A very significant change on the western belt was the construction of the Vienna light rail around 1900, which can now be used as the U6 on the belt . The proposal made in the 1960s and 1970s to develop the belt into an urban freeway was ultimately rejected by city politicians.

B221  Like the other former federal highways, Wiener Gürtel Strasse was part of the federal administration. Since April 1, 2002, it has been under state administration and continues to have the B in the number, but not the name Bundesstraße.
