B 100 between Villach and Weißenbach; The Tauern Autobahn runs over the Gummerner Brücke

The Drautal Straße (B 100) - in Tyrol Drautalstraße - is a state road in Austria with a length of 135.6 km.

course

The Drautalstraße leads from Villach along the Drau via Spittal an der Drau and Lienz to the state border at Sillian and Italy , where it turns into the Pustertal state road. In the first section, the road in the Lower Drautal runs parallel to the Tauern Autobahn (A 10) . After Spittal it leads through the Lurnfeld into the Obere Drautal . The last section from Lienz to Sillian belongs to the Pustertal. The Drautal Straße is accompanied over the entire route by the Drautalbahn .

In a scenic route, the Drautal Straße always leads along the northern edge of the Gailtal Alps . In the north, the Nockberge , the Reisseckgruppe and the Kreuzeckgruppe alternate (from east to west) .

history

The Drautalstraße connects Carinthia and Tyrol. That is why it was previously called Tiroler Straße in Carinthia , but was called Pustertaler Straße in Tyrol . In Carinthia there were five toll stations in Paternion, Spittal, Sachsenburg, Greifenburg and Oberdrauburg, which brought the state treasury around 5,200 guilders in 1847.

The Pustertaler Straße was so badly damaged by storms in 1883 that the state had to spend 278,000 guilders to restore this road.

The Pustertaler Straße (in Tyrol) and the Tiroler Straße (in Carinthia) belong to the former imperial roads that were taken over as federal roads in 1921. Until 1938 this road was designated as the B 63, after the connection of Austria its eastern section between Dölsach and Villach was called Reichsstraße 336 , while its western section between Dölsach and Sillian was part of Reichsstraße 21 .

Since April 1, 1948, the route between Villach and the Italian state border near Sillian has been continuously referred to as Drautal Straße . After the completion of the road tunnel near Sachsenburg, the former Drautal Straße through Sachsenburg was downgraded to Landesstraße 14 in 1993 and renamed Sachsenburger Straße .

On February 24, 2010, a mudslide laid the Drautal Straße near Leisach in East Tyrol with almost one million cubic meters of rubble. While the Drautalbahn was passable again after three days, the closure of the Drautal Straße lasted longer because the armed forces had to build a temporary bridge over the Drau .

Greifenburg bypass

The new construction of the B 100 in the area of the municipalities of Greifenburg , Berg and Dellach is an ongoing issue that has been politically active since at least 1992. Conflicts over the pros and cons led environmental activists to use the short-lived pirate station Radio Rübezahl to agitate against the expansion. For Greifenburg and Dellach, where through traffic rolls through the town center, the bypass is in the foreground. In Berg, where the B 100 already passes the site, the existing route is to be upgraded. Although there is broad agreement on the new route near the Drautalbahn , the 2017 environmental impact assessment is still pending and funding is not secured. [outdated]

B100  Like the other former federal highways, Drautal Strasse was part of the federal administration. Since April 1, 2002, it has been under state administration and continues to have the B in the number, but not the name Bundesstraße.
