The Friesacher road B 317 is a state highway B in Styria and Carinthia and former federal highway . It runs 70 km from Judenburg over the Perchauer Sattel and Friesach to St. Veit an der Glan and connects the Murtal expressway S 36 with the Klagenfurt expressway S 37.

The road begins Template: future / in 3 yearsin the Upper Murtal in Judenburg (junction Judenburg West of the S6), and leads along the Murtal generally westwards. At Scheifling it turns into the Doppelbach valley and from there leads south. After the Perchauer saddle ( 995 m above sea level , east of the Neumarkter saddle ) it leads out the valley of the Perchauerbach and follows the Olsatal from Neumarkt in Styria and St. Marein . At St. Stefan she reaches the Metnitztal , which she leads out to the Gurktal at Zwischenwässern , and then that on to the Krappfeld near Althofen . At its southern end it changes over the hill of the Wolschartwald to the southwest into the Glan valley . The S 37 reaches you in the Frauenstein municipality (also the name of the junction) north of St. Veit.

The B 317 is well developed on many parts. The road between St. Veit and Friesach is free of intersections except for a short section at Althofen and has two lanes in each direction. The road between St. Georgen ob Judenburg and UnzmarktTemplate: future / in 3 years also has four lanes, the lanes are offset in height and there is a structural central division, as well as underground routes in St. Georgen and Unzmarkt. history

The Friesacher Straße largely follows the Alpine transit route of the Virunum - Ovilava (Zollfeld - Wels), part of the Via Norica, which at least goes back to Roman times . The Triester Reichsstraße then led over the route of the B 317 from Vienna to Trieste, the Austrian part of which was run as the B 17 Triester Straße until 1971 .

The Scheiflinger Ofen tunnel on the eastern edge of Scheifling (then B 96 Murtalstrasse) was built in 1989–91.

The B 317 was created in 1999 through the renaming and partial expansion of the section of the Kärntner Straße B 83 between Klagenfurt and Scheifling, as well as the eastern part of the Murtal Straße B 96 between Scheifling and Judenburg. That is why the kilometrage in Scheifling still starts with 0.0 today. The Murtal route covers km D0.0 – D19.4 (the B 96 begins in Scheifling with 19.6). The section Judenburg - St. Georgen, up to the new connection to Triebener Straße (B 114) is marked with T0.0 – T2.6.

The road was transferred from the federal government to the federal states of Carinthia and Styria as a state road in 2002.

Since the introduction of the truck toll in 2004, an increasing number of truck drivers on the Vienna - Klagenfurt route have switched to the B 317. For this reason, a driving ban for trucks over 7.5 tons was imposed between Scheifling and Dürnstein in 2006 . As of January 1, 2007, the upgraded line from Klagenfurt to St. Veit will be part of the Klagenfurt expressway (S 37) and - also in response to evacuation traffic - will be subject to a vignette or truck toll.

It has long been planned to expand the B 317 from Judenburg to Scheifling as an extension of the Murtal expressway (S 6). Around 2005 the Ministry of Transport carried out a strategic review of the expansion of the B 317. The Murtal section between St. Georgen and Scheifling has been under construction since 2013: the expansion will be completed by Unzmark in 2020 (some sections there are already known as S 6), the other sections are partly in the planning phase. The expansion from Scheifling to St. Veit as an expressway (S 37) has been completely postponed since 2015.

B317	Like the other former federal highways, Friesacher Strasse was part of the federal administration. Since April 1, 2002, it has been under state administration and continues to have the B in the number, but not the name Bundesstraße.
