The Wimitz (Wimitzbach) is a left side brook of the Glan in central carinthia . The name is derived from the Slovenian V (u) novica , which means Outer River and originally only referred to the Outer Wimitz.

The Wimitz rises from the Goggau lake (775 m) in the municipality of Steuerberg ( Feldkirchen district ). It flows through an almost uninhabited valley in the Wimitzer Mountains . In the urban area of St. Veit it flows into the Glan.

The Wimitz is a low mountain stream with a nivo-pluvial discharge regime with a maximum in April / May. The catchment area is 131.2 km². Due to the pronounced retention areas, there are no pronounced floods. The ecomorphological status of the river can be regarded as natural with the exception of the lower reaches, the water quality can be given in the upper reaches with class I (hardly polluted), in the lower reaches with I-II (hardly to moderately polluted).

The Wimitz is a practically completely natural river course. By the meandering river is a natural form Au and marsh forests with dominant gray alder and marsh meadows with marsh calla ( Calla pallustris ).

On the upper course, the Inner Wimitz , the otter occurs sporadically . Among the fish comes in addition to the dominant brown trout still Koppe ago. The upper course was declared a nature reserve Innere Wimitz (LGBl. No. 5/1989).

The author and later serial killer Jack Unterweger spent part of his childhood with his grandfather in the Wimitztal.
