The Feldkirchen district is a political district in the state of Carinthia .
history
It has existed since January 1, 1982. Before that, the municipalities had been assigned to the Klagenfurt-Land district from 1850 , from October 1, 1903 until the formation of an independent district, Feldkirchen was a political branch , which assigned a large part of all competencies for direct execution got, but was bound by instructions to the Klagenfurt district captain.
geography
The district is located in the Gurktal Alps in northern Carinthia, where it borders on the federal state of Styria . It includes the uppermost Gurktal and extends in the southeast into the Klagenfurt Basin , in the southwest to the Ossiacher See . With 558.56 km² it is the smallest in terms of area - apart from the statutory cities of Klagenfurt and Villach - and the second smallest in terms of population with 29,902 (as of January 1, 2020 ).

Population development
The Feldkirchen district has 29,967 inhabitants (as of 2018). The main settlement areas are the Glan Valley and the area along the main traffic connection from north to south. The district has had a strongly positive population development over the past decades. Only in recent years has there been a slight decline. However, by 2030 the population will decline more strongly, a decrease of 2% compared to 2018 is expected.
income
The average income in Feldkirchen is below the average of Carinthia and below that of Austria. In contrast, the unemployment rate is significantly below that of Carinthia and, since 2016, also below that of Austria. It is striking that youth unemployment is relatively high. In contrast, the number of long-term unemployed is far below the average in Carinthia and Austria and is falling contrary to the national trend.

The Feldkirchen district has a high proportion of out- commuters who work in the central Carinthian area with the cities of Klagenfurt and Villach . In 2014 this was 45% of those in employment , while around 25% commuted from other districts.

The economic focal points of the Feldkirchen district are industry and tourism . Around 80% of the 7,600 employed work in small and medium-sized enterprises. In tourism there is a focus on summer tourism around the Ossiacher See and in winter with the Turracher Höhe ski area .

With 9%, the Feldkirchen district has the third largest share of alpine forage areas of all Carinthian districts after Spittal / Drau (59%) and Hermagor (10%). The cattle population is also above the Carinthian average with 16,950 animals.
In 2017 the logging totaled 133,710 cubic meters , of which over 93% was coniferous wood .

Tourism has two centers: Ossiach and Steindorf, due to their location on Lake Ossiach, are the center of summer tourism. The community of Reichenau with the Turracher Höhe ski area is the center of winter tourism. Together with the district capital Feldkirchen, these four communities have over 90% of the overnight stays in the district.

The Feldkirchen district is located north of the Carinthian central area with the cities of Klagenfurt and Villach in an inner-Alpine basin.
- Railway: A local railway connects the district capital with the Villach railway junction in the west and with St. Veit in the east.
- Road: There is no connection to a national transport network, but there is a well-developed road from north to south with connections to Villach in the west and St. Veit in the east.
