List of the political districts of Carinthia
The list of political districts of Carinthia shows the ten political districts of Carinthia , the fifth largest state in Austria .
Political communities and districts were created in Carinthia as in all of Austria around the year 1850. The originally 181 municipalities of Carinthia were assigned to the 28 district courts that were newly founded in 1849, and several of them were each subordinate to a district authority. From 1854 to 1868 there were 28 districts in Carinthia in addition to the provincial capital Klagenfurt; these district offices took care of both political administration and jurisdiction. In 1868 the division essentially reverted to the district division created in 1850, which only underwent two changes in Carinthia: in 1932 Villach became a statutory town , and in 1982 the Feldkirchen district was formed.
Two of the ten districts are statutory cities, namely Klagenfurt am Wörthersee and Villach . Both are also the seat of another district authority ( Klagenfurt-Land and Villach-Land ).
The state capital Klagenfurt is both the most populous and the smallest district in terms of area. Among the rural districts, the two western districts are the least populated: Spittal an der Drau , the largest and most populous district in terms of area, and Hermagor , the district with the fewest inhabitants in Carinthia. Feldkirchen is the smallest district in Carinthia.
