history

Two stone axes from the Neolithic and ceramics from the Late Bronze Age bear witness to the early presence of humans in Althofen. Noteworthy is a barrow from the Hallstatt period , which was found in 1900 near the train station. The Roman settlement of Althofen is evident from numerous small finds and some inscription stones.

Around 600 Alpine Slavs settled . In 1041 the place was first mentioned as Altanhouun . Around 1230, the town of Althofen was granted market rights and at that time it was an important trading center in Carinthia: It served as the main trading point for iron from the region around Hüttenberg . Historical importance in Althofen is attributed to the Counts of Egger and the Dickmann-Secherau family, who dominated the mining of iron from Treibach-Althofen in the surrounding towns, especially in the 19th century. The Counts of Egger were the owners of the “Treibacher Werke”, the forerunner of today's Treibacher Industrie AG .

Althofen - like the neighboring Friesach and the surrounding Krappfeld - belonged to the "foreign rulers" of the Archbishopric of Salzburg until 1803 .

In the 16th century, the Counts of Egger built an iron-processing industrial company near the Gurk , the Hammerwerk an der Gurk (in Treibach, at times its own municipality, today a district), which experienced its heyday in the 17th century and a few years after that which lasted until 1815 French wars was closed. In 1897 Carl Auer von Welsbach bought the ironworks and converted it into an electro-chemical test company, which was the cornerstone for the “Treibacher Chemischen Werke” (TCW) founded in 1907, which is now known as “ Treibacher Industrie AG ” (TIAG) that produce only a few flints, but a lot of catalysts for oil refining, for example.

For a long time, the residential buildings in the Treibach district, especially those on the Ringstrasse around the chemical plant, were mainly built by industrial companies. Not until 1980 was there any noteworthy residential construction by other owners.

On June 24, 1993 the market town was granted town charter.

Preserved Roman stones

  • On the buttress of the parish church is a well-preserved Roman tombstone with masterful decorations. The text reads: “Publius Aelius Tertullus did this for himself and for his wife Secunda during his lifetime”. The pictures on the narrow sides show a dancing maenad with a bird and a knife, opposite a naked maenad with a fruit basket on his shoulder and a branch of laurel.
  • On the north side of the church there is a well-preserved grave inscription: "Finitus, slave of Claudius Priscus, did this to the dead gods of brother Commodus and grandson Commodinus".
  • On the north side of the branch church of St. Cäcilia is the epitaph for Atticus, Quarta, Tiberius Claudius Uppius, Muso and Belatulla.

coat of arms

Blazon : "A bundle of naturally colored iron rods in blue on a golden three-mountain, bound with two golden ribbons and topped with a golden lily."

The original coat of arms document from 11 December 1479 issued by Archbishop Bernhard von Salzburg is the oldest preserved Carinthian original with a coat of arms. The bundle of iron bars symbolizes the rise of the market as the center of the Salzburg iron trade from the Görtschitztal or from the Hüttenberger Erzberg . There are no contemporary sources for the other two motifs, the Dreiberg could refer to the mountain location of the main town, the lily to the rule of the Archdiocese of Salzburg.

The flag of Althofen is blue and yellow with an incorporated coat of arms.
