history

The fertile area was already relatively densely populated in Celtic and Roman times. The church in St. Martin was built in 991/1023, the Alt-Mannsberg castle in 1065, the parish church of St. Paul in Kappel was first mentioned in a document in 1158.

The place name Kappel goes back to an early and important capella , from which today's parish church of St. Martin emerged, which became an important mother parish in the area. From the 15th to the 18th century, the provosts of St. Bartlmä zu Friesach held the parish and temporarily resided there. With Mannsberg Castle , owned by the Gurk Cathedral Provost from 1627 to 1876, and Silberegg Castle, there are two former mansions in what is now the municipality.

After the March Revolution of 1848, the local parishes of Krasta and Silberegg were initially formed in 1850, which were combined to form Krasta in 1870. In 1958 the community name was changed to Kappel am Krappfeld . The dissolution of the community in the course of the structural reform in Carinthia was prevented by a referendum.

politics

Municipal council

The municipal council consists of 15 members and has been composed as follows since the municipal council election in 2015 :

Mayor was Martin Gruber ( ÖVP ) from 2009 to 2018 . On April 12, 2018, he moved to the Carinthian provincial government as regional councilor . Since a regional councilor cannot be mayor at the same time, a new election took place on June 24, 2018. Candidates for the office were Gabriele Moser (ÖVP), Josef Klausner (SPÖ) and Heinrich Rattenberger (FPÖ). After none of the three candidates achieved an absolute majority, there was a runoff on July 8, 2018 between the two strongest candidates, Gabriele Moser (ÖVP) and Josef Klausner (SPÖ), with Josef Klausner as mayor with 54.2 percent of the votes was chosen.

coat of arms

Blazon : "In a blue shield on the flanks two golden ears of wheat stake, in between in the base of the shield a silver pinnacle tip covered with a blue rafter, overlaid by a silver miter with flying ribbons."

On the one hand, the municipality's coat of arms alludes to the various former ruling factions in today's municipality: the silver corner in the base of the shield stands “talking” for Silberegg, the tinned tip above it on Mannsberg Castle and the miter on the Gurker or Friesacher Proöpste. The two ears of corn stand for the grain industry, which is economically important for the community to this day, and the blue shield background alludes to the importance of the area as a water reservoir.

The municipality's coat of arms and flag were awarded on September 11, 1995. The flag is blue and white with an incorporated coat of arms.
