In 1041 and 1060 a "Chabellan" , a chapel, is mentioned on the Krappfeld . Until 1144 Kappel belonged to the parish of Friesach , after which the patronage rights went to the Salzburg archbishops . 1158 a pastor is named Perenhardus in Kappel.

Building description

From the Romanesque choir tower church from the 12th century, the choir tower and parts of the hall are still present. The late Gothic star rib vault in the nave was built in 1513. At the same time, the apse closing off the tower to the east was removed and replaced by a round-arched entrance with a Gothic profile, and a sacristy was added to the south of the tower . At that time the orientation of the Church was changed from east to west. In the middle of the 18th century the church underwent extensive renovations. To the west of the nave, a three-corner choir in the shape of a cloverleaf - probably based on the model of the Salzburg Cathedral - was added, a baroque sacristy with a gallery on the upper floor was added to the south and the church tower was crowned with a French dome . In 1965 the tower was provided with a concrete jacket to secure it up to the height of the nave. On the outside wall of the church there is a large crucifix from the 19th century, the late Gothic priest grave slab of Christian Tumerler (around 1500) and a Roman spoil .

The star rib vault in the four-bay nave rests on pillars with ornamentally decorated, late Gothic capitals . On the parapet of the baroque singing gallery is an oval painting with Cecilia playing the organ .

Facility

The three altars and the pulpit from the middle of the 18th century come from the workshop of Johann Pacher . The high altar shows the fall of St. Paul on the altar panel, flanked by the carved figures of Apostles Peter and James the Elder, as well as two other saints above the sacrificial portals . The altarpiece is made up of a burning heart in a halo, surrounded by angels.

On the two side altars, angel figures carry the richly cranked entablature. The central niche of the left side altar contains an enthroned Mother of God with two kneeling religious saints, the top is a representation of the Holy Trinity . The death of Franz Xavier is depicted on the right side altar , above the Holy Family .

The four Latin Fathers of the Church are seated at the basket of the pulpit . Reliefs on the parapet fields show the calling of Matthew , the ascension of Elijah and the sower . The transfiguration on Mount Tabor can be seen on the sound cover .

Karner

The ossuary south-west of the church is a Romanesque round building from the 13th century with a stone-plate-covered conical roof, a semicircular apse with star vaults on consoles, which was painted in the 16th century. The arched window on the south side was uncovered in 1982. Outside, a Roman tomb relief depicting a winged genius and a profiled cornice fragment are walled in.

The round chapel in the northeast corner of the churchyard wall was a fortification tower of the former fortification.
