history

In today's municipal area, the "noric iron" ( ferrum noricum ), valued for its quality, has been mined since pre-Roman times . Hüttenberg, first mentioned in a document in 1266, had been a market since at least the second half of the 14th century (first referred to as such in 1367). The place under the rule of the Salzburg archbishop was 1492 by Emperor Friedrich III. awarded a market coat of arms.

Hüttenberg was constituted as a political municipality in 1850, and in 1865 the local community of St. Martin am Silberberg was attached to it, which was made independent again in 1922/24. During the Carinthian municipal structural reform of 1973, the large municipality of Hüttenberg was created in its current size through the incorporation of St. Johann am Pressen, St. Martin am Silberberg and part of Lölling.

At the beginning of the 19th century, four large mining companies had emerged: the Rauscher company and the Dickmann, Egger and Christallnig trade companies. These four trades merged in 1869 to form the “Hüttenberger Eisenwerk-Gesellschaft” as a stock corporation.

The blast furnaces in the booklet were shut down in 1901 and 1908, as the location could no longer keep up with the more favored Upper Styria and its richer ore deposits and lignite deposits. The later university professor Heinz Meixner worked as a company mineralogist in the mining management of the existing mine. Since the closure of the mining operation in 1978, which reached its peak in World War II , there has been economic decline, population loss and an accompanying aging population. Among other things, the migration of almost all long-established businesses, the closure of the train station and the abandonment of the track.

As part of the Carinthian State Exhibition in 1995 under the motto Grubenhunt & Ofensau , the townscape was extensively revitalized.

population

Population development

The population decline at the beginning of the 20th century coincided with the closure of the blast furnaces. The decrease in the number of inhabitants at the end of the 20th century is reflected in many rural communities that are not close to a city, but is particularly pronounced in Hüttenberg. In addition to a small negative birth balance, there is a strongly negative migration balance .

Citizenship, Religion

According to the 2001 census, Hüttenberg has 1,804 inhabitants, 98.3% of whom are Austrian citizens. 90.6% of the population profess the Roman Catholic and 2.7% the Evangelical Church, 5.7% are without religious beliefs.

Culture and sights

Hüttenberg offers many historical points of contact. Special features include the Heinrich Harrer Museum , the historic blast furnaces in the Heft district and a show mine in the higher-lying Knappenberg. The area around Hüttenberg is one of the most famous mineral deposits in the world. A mineral, Löllingite , is named after the town of Lölling in the municipality of Hüttenberg. The pilgrimage church of Maria Waitschach is located high above Hüttenberg .

The Hüttenberg mountain chapel is over 300 years old and is the oldest chapel in Carinthia and an important cultural institution in the area.

coat of arms

The market Hüttenberg was on June 20, 1492 by Emperor Friedrich III. awarded a coat of arms. The coat of arms was awarded at the time of the occupation of Salzburg possessions by imperial troops between 1481 and 1494 during the “Hungarian War”; In 1489 the fortified Hüttenberg was successfully defended against Hungarian troops. Perhaps on this occasion, Friedrich gave the market the coat of arms, which was followed by King Maximilian 's confirmation of privileges and coat of arms in 1493 . The imperial claim to the Salzburg mining area and the defense against the Hungarians make the interpretation as a "talking" coat of arms ("Hüt´ den Berg") plausible.

The use of the coat of arms and flag was confirmed to the market community by certification or re-award in 1971 and 1973, with the blazon of 1492 being used for the coat of arms .

The official blazon of the coat of arms reads: “ In a black shield an iron spade rock of natural color, which is completely surrounded by a naturally colored battlement wall; In the middle part of a tinned gate tower with a closed golden gate grows a red-clad man with blond hair who strikes with a bare sword. "

The flag is black-yellow-red with an incorporated coat of arms.
