The Görtschitz is a left tributary of the Gurk in Carinthia . The name is derived from the Slovenian Krčica and means little cucumber .
The Görtschitz rises in southern Upper Styria at an altitude of 1912 m above sea level. A. as Waldbach . Below Hüttenberg, the Görtschitz flows through a narrow valley that only widens at Mösel. At Brückl it flows into the Gurk at 498 m above sea level. It forms the Görtschitztal along its entire length and takes in the streams coming from the Saualpe (e.g. Löllinger Bach) from the left, and the streams from the much lower Brückler and Guttaringer Bergland to the right.
The Görtschitz discharge regime is autumn-nival, it has two maxima in late spring and autumn. The catchment area covers around 315 km². The mean water flow at the mouth is 3.8 m³ / s. The Görtschitz is only moderately contaminated and has quality classes I-II. With the exception of the local areas of Hüttenberg, Klein St. Paul and Brückl, the ecomorphological condition can be described as little impaired.
In the Görtschitz there are mainly brown trout .
Occurrence of hexachlorobenzene
The Görtschitztal became known in the media in November 2014 when the pollutant hexachlorobenzene (HCB) was found in food and soil in such relevant quantities that milk, meat, vegetables, game were recalled and hay was thrown away. The suspected cause is a cement works that approved blue lime , which had been contaminated with HCB in a landfill, burned to dispose of and recycle it.
Finds from the Copper Age
While searching for two places Noreia marked on a Roman road map , Gottfried Wernig from the amateur archaeological association Arge Noreia found 1 kg of ceramic parts in 2016 at Kirchberg in Görtschitztal. Were dated to the Copper Age. The creation of terraces in the area indicates settlement.
