The Saualpe ( Slov .: Svinška planina ) is a low mountain range of the Central Alps in the Lavanttal Alps in Carinthia west of the Lavant river .
topography
The gentle mountain ridge stretches from the Klippitztörl to the Drautal, running in a north-south direction . The highest peak of the mountain range consisting of gneiss and mica schist is the Ladinger Spitz ( 2079 m above sea level ).
The Saualpe belongs to the Lavanttal Alps or Noric Alps and is bordered in the north by the Klippitztörl, in the east by the Lavanttal , in the south by the Drau and Jauntal and in the west by the Görtschitz and lower Gurktal . The main peaks are (from north to south):
- Hohenwart ( 1818 m ), the striking elevation is the northernmost of the Saualpe.
- Geierkogel ( 1917 m )
- Stone wedding ( 2028 m )
- Forstalpe ( 2034 m )
- Hafeneck ( 2027 m )
- Kienberg ( 2050 m )
- Gertrusk ( 2044 m )
- Kaiserofen ( 2037 m )
- Ladinger Spitz ( 2079 m )
- Sandkogel ( 2011 m )
- Speikkogel ( 1901 m )
- Big Sauofen ( 1895 m )
- Small Sauofen ( 1830 m )
In the north of the mountain range a road crosses the Klippitztörl, a ski and summer tourist area.
The Saualpe is characterized by crooked, round shapes from which individual piles of rock, the so-called ovens , stand out. You can also find two small bodies of water on the Alpe, known in the area as Meeraugen , and the Gertrusk pond.
Culture and sights
On the slopes of the Saualpe, already high above the valley, there are fortified churches that offered protection for the population at the time of the Turkish wars .
- Parish Church Diex
- Parish Church of St. Georg in Lamm
- Parish church Pustritz
- Margaret Church Tschrietes
- Martinskirche (Greutschach)

Hiking trails and huts
In the mountains there is a well signposted, widely branched network of hiking trails with many rewarding peaks. The Eisenwurzenweg (Austrian long-distance hiking trail 08) crosses the Saualpe.
- Klippitztörlhütte ( 1644 m ), on the Klippitztörl near the ski area
- Breitofner Hut ( 1515 m ), north of the Weißberger Hut
- Weißenberger hut ( 1607 m ), just to the west under the Gertrusk located
- Wolfsberger Hütte ( 1827 m ), a little south of the Ladinger Spitze, OeAV Wolfsberg section
- Steinerhütte (also Rauscherhütte) ( 1555 m ), located a little to the west under the Great Sauofen
- Druckerhütte ( 1478 m ), to the west under the Steiner Hütte
geology
The Saualpe is a very old polymetamorphic terran that existed before the formation of the Alps and was located far south of the equator in geological distant times. The first metamorphosis was the Permian HT / LP (high temperature / low pressure) event which left traces of zoned grenades in the amphibolite facial metapelites of the southern Saualpe. The most important rock types are the gneiss , the mica schist group and the phyllite group, which build up the southern edge of the Saualpe and the western flank of the Görtschitztal. Mineralogically and because of its historical iron industry, the Hüttenberger Erzberg , located on the northwestern edge of the Saualpe, is interesting with deposits of siderite and small amounts of pyrite and barite . Also worth mentioning are the type localities of the rock eclogite near Kupplerbrunn (municipality of Eberstein ) and the mineral zoisite .
