Andreas Pilger (born December 19, 1910 in Steglitz , † February 25, 1997 in Clausthal-Zellerfeld ) was a German geologist. He was professor and director of the Institute for Geology and Paleontology at the Clausthal University of Technology . He dealt in particular with tectonics and mining geology .

After graduating from high school at Arndt-Gymnasium in Berlin-Dahlem, Pilger studied geology in Munich and Berlin. He received his doctorate in 1936 under Hans Stille at the Humboldt University in Berlin ( Corsica's alpine ceiling construction and its syntectic intrusions ). In 1936/37 he worked as a petroleum geologist at Deutsche Erdöl AG (DEA) in Wietze . He then worked as an assistant at Stille in Berlin, where he completed his habilitation in 1942 ( paleogeography and tectonics of Yugoslavia between the Una and the Zlatibor Mountains ). Then he was a lecturer at the University of Berlin and from 1942 military geologist at the same time . After the Second World War, he was at the Geological State Office of North Rhine-Westphalia in Krefeld from 1948, from 1951 as a state geologist and from 1955 as head of the Deposits Department. From 1952 he was also an adjunct professor at the University of Cologne and was a member of the deposit committee of the Society of German Metalworkers and Miners . From 1956 he was a full professor at the Bergakademie Clausthal, the later TU Clausthal. 1960 to 1962 he was its rector. In 1979 he retired. He turned down offers to the universities of Frankfurt and Bochum and as President of the Geological State Office of North Rhine-Westphalia.

In the 1950s he worked at the Geological State Office of North Rhine-Westphalia with the mapping of ore and coal deposits in the Ruhr area, Siegerland and the Rhenish Slate Mountains. From 1957 he dealt with the new inclusion of old crystalline in Carinthia and from 1959 with the Paleozoic of the Western Pyrenees. In the 1970s he also turned to plate tectonics, particularly in the context of the East African rift valley system ( Afar depression ). Most recently, he also dealt with questions of glacial glaciation in the Harz Mountains and the cultural-historical context of Harz geology.

In 1965 he was the founder of the series Clausthal geological treatises and Clausthal tectonic booklets. He had almost 100 undergraduate and postgraduate students and ten post-doctoral students.

In 1971 he received the Hans Stille Medal . In 1986 he became an honorary senator of the Clausthal University of Technology, of which he was a member from 1958 to 1964. From 1960 to 1962 and 1968 to 1970 he was deputy chairman and 1964 to 1966 chairman of the German Geological Society. Pilger was also chairman of the Montangeological Working Group for the West German hard coal regions for five years. He was also Chairman of the Commission on the Tectonics of Ore Deposits of the International Association of Geology of Ore Deposits (IAGOD) for three years . Since 1970 he has been a member of the Braunschweig Scientific Society .

In 1990 his student Heinz Jordan named a 2050 m high mountain in the Bowers Mountains (North Victoria Land) of Antarctica Mount Pilger .

He had been married since 1941.
