Süßenstein Castle

Castle Sweet Stone is a gothic castle in the Austrian hut mountain in Carinthia . It was built in the 16th and 17th centuries.

location

The castle is directly integrated into the townscape and is located in the area of the confluence of the Mosinz and the Steirerbach , which is called Görtschitz from the confluence . The castle, with a distinctive, sloping tower, rises above the valley floor and can be reached via a bridge.

history

The Süßenstein Castle has its origins in Roman times. Romanesque and Gothic core elements have been preserved from many renovations, especially window and door elements. Süßenstein was first mentioned in 1247 as Burg Althaus in the Carinthian annals. Wulfingus de Huse with the nickname Cubertellus appears as the owner. As can be seen from the documents, Wulfingus came from one of the most distinguished Carinthian families. In the Middle Ages, hus was a general term for stone, fortified buildings.

The history of the castle records an attack by the Hungarians in 1488 . However, the attack could be repulsed. From 1610 until the 19th century the castle served as the official seat of the mountain judge from Hüttenberg - it was therefore the seat of the Hüttenberg mountain court. During this time, the castle was repeatedly harassed by angry miners who revolted against the decisions of the mountain judge. Since then, as the seat of the mountain court, the Süßenstein building has been inextricably linked with the history of the ore mountain Hüttenberg. The castle was enlarged after a fire in the 17th century and renovated after another fire in the 19th century.

restoration

From 1970 to 1979 the castle was restored and run as a hotel for seminars and meetings. In 1992 it was acquired by the current owner and meticulously adapted as a collector's item. Particular attention was paid to maintaining the typical Gothic style. Among other things, a new roof was put on, the heating system renewed and new installations installed.
