history

The place was first mentioned in 1619 as Roshdestvenskoje-Kochma , whereby the first part of the name refers to the name of the village church (Russian Roshdestwo Christowo for the birth of Christ ), while the second part probably goes back to a pre-Russian name of the area (also the nearby Ivanovo was called Ivanovo Kochma in the 17th century ).

In 1719 the first cloth weaving mill in the area was established in the village of Kochma.

In 1925 the town was granted city rights.
