Zavolzhsk ( Russian Заволжск ) is a town in the Ivanovo ( Russia ) with 12,045 inhabitants (14 October 2010).

geography

The city is located about 110 km northeast of the oblast capital Ivanovo on the left bank of the Volga , opposite the city of Kineshma . It should not be confused with the town of Savolschje in the neighboring Nizhny Novgorod Oblast .

Zavolzhsk is the administrative center of the raion of the same name .

history

The place was built in the mid-19th century as the district on the opposite bank of the Volga ( Zavolzhye of Russian sa Wolgoi for behind the Volga ) located Kineschma, as here, a weaving mill was built for cotton fabrics. In 1871 a chemical factory (for sulfuric acid ) went into operation.

In 1934 the district became an independent settlement as Zavolschje , which was given town charter on October 4, 1954 under its current name. On October 9, 1968 the city became the administrative center of a newly founded Rajons.

Culture and sights

The Epiphany Church ( церковь Богоявления / zerkow Bogojawlenija) from 1779 has been preserved in Savolschje. In the nearby village of Bredichino is the former country residence of the eminent astronomer Fyodor Bredichin . The museum dedicated to him there burned down in 1994.

Economy and Infrastructure

In addition to plants in the chemical industry (paints, plastics), there are companies in the food, textile and wood processing industries in Zavolschk.

The town is the terminus of a 32-kilometer railway line (only freight), which in Perwuschino of the route Yaroslavl - Kostroma - Galich branches.

Zavolzhsk is connected to the Kostroma Oblast road network via the R101 road to Ostrovskoye . There is no bridge to the neighboring Kineshma, so that there is no permanent connection to the road network or to the Ivanovo – Kineshma railway on the right bank of the Volga.
