Baichung Bhutia (born December 15, 1976 in Tinkitam , Sikkim ) is an Indian soccer player and former national player. The striker is considered to be one of the best players the country has produced.
He began his career at the age of ten when he played for the Tashi Namgyal Academy in Gangtok . He left Sikkim at the age of 16 and began his career at the East Bengal Club in Kolkata , for which he played from 1993 to 1995. After two successful years at the JCT Mills in Phagwara , winning the championship and top scorer crown in 1996/97, Bhutia returned to East Bengal in 1997, where he spent another two years.
In 1999 he finally moved to Bury FC in the English third division . In England, however, he was only able to play 37 games and score three goals in three years. In 2002 Bhutia returned to India, where he first played for Mohun Bagan (2002-2003) and again for East Bengal (2003-2006). After a short stay in Malaysia ( Perak ), Bhutia returned to Mohun Bagan. In the 2007/08 season he played in the newly created I-League . In 2009 Bhutia moved to the big league rivals East Bengal Club before moving to United Sikkim in 2011 , of which he is co-owner.
Bhutia made his debut in the Indian national football team in 1995 and became the youngest goalscorer in India's national team with his goal against Uzbekistan at the Nehru Cup at the age of 19. At the Nehru Cup 2009 he played his 100th appearance in the national selection against Kyrgyzstan . With the national team he won the AFC Challenge Cup 2008 and was voted the best player of the tournament. Bhutia has now made a total of 107 international matches for India, scoring 43 goals. Bhutia ended his career in the national team with the friendly against Bayern Munich on January 10, 2012 .
Bhutia is a staunch atheist. On December 27, 2004, he married his girlfriend Madhuri Tipnis in Sikkim. In 2008, Bhutia hit the headlines because he refused to carry the torch at the Olympic torch relay out of sympathy for the Tibetan independence movement .
In the parliamentary elections in India in 2014 , Bhutia stood as a candidate for the All India Trinamool Congress party in the constituency of Darjeeling , but missed entry into parliament.
