Perak ( Jawi :ڤيرق, Pronunciation: [peˈraʔ] ; German translation: Silver ) is one of the largest and most populous states of Malaysia and a sultanate . The capital is Ipoh , the seat of the Sultan is Kuala Kangsar . The world's largest tin deposits are located in Perak. Other well-known cities of Perak are u. a. Lumut , Taiping, and Teluk Intan .

geography

The state of Perak is located on the west coast of the Malay Peninsula on the Strait of Malacca . In the northwest it borders on the states of Penang and Kedah , in the north on the neighboring country Thailand , in the east on the states Kelantan and Pahang and in the south on Selangor .

In the middle of the Strait of Malacca, between the state and Sumatra , lies the island of the same name, Perak (" pulau perak "), which is only about half a square kilometer and does not belong to Perak, but to the state of Kedah .

About halfway between the island of Penang and Kuala Lumpur , the touristic island of Pangkor is off the coast of Perak about two kilometers.

In the south of Perak, not far from the border with the state of Selangor, the river Perak flows into the Strait of Malacca.

In the Kinta Valley , also in the southern part of Perak, the largest tin deposits on earth were discovered in 1884 .

history

In the sultanate to the north, the tin business began in 1848. The shimmering silver metal was extracted from the earth by Chinese immigrants. Soon afterwards there were armed conflicts between rival secret societies for power in the mines . On the island of Pangkor, the Treaty of Pangkor between a local Raja and the British Andrew Clarke was signed in January 1874 , which marked a turning point for English colonial interests in the area. The Sultanate and three others formed the Federated Malay States in 1896 .

Administrative division

Administratively, Perak was divided into nine districts ( Malay : daerah ) until 2009 . In May 2009 the Kampar district was added. The capital Ipoh is in the Kinta district .
