Lumut is a city in the Malaysian state of Perak and is located on the west coast of the Malay Peninsula , around 50 km southwest of Ipoh (approx. 84 kilometers by road) and 160 km northeast of the capital Kuala Lumpur . Around 38,000 people live in Lumut.
The name Lumut is translated into Malay seagrass or algae . The first inhabitants called the settlement Lumut, as there are a lot of algae on the coast.
Lumut is the main gateway for visitors to Pulau Pangkor Island . Pulau Pangkor is located approximately six kilometers west of downtown Lumut.
Ferries to various islands in the area leave several times a day. The Jetty Ferry connects Lumut with two piers on Pulau Pangkor several times an hour .
Lumut is known for its handcrafted souvenirs made from shells and corals and local fish specialties.
Every year between August and November there is a folk festival with many sports activities in the sea and other cultural events.
In recent years, the Malaysian Navy has built its main base of operations and several docks and a naval shipyard (BNS) in Lumut .
The Lumut bus station has good bus connections to all major cities in Malaysia and Singapore.
