Ipoh is a city in Malaysia with 673,346 inhabitants (2005). It is the capital of the state of Perak and is located in the Kinta district .
Location and geography
Ipoh is located about 200 km north of Kuala Lumpur on the Kinta River . The valley around Ipoh is rich in tin . About a kilometer east of Ipoh, in the Kinta Valley, lies Gua Tambun , a rock roof in which important rock paintings from the Neolithic were discovered.
history
Ipoh grew rapidly, especially in the 1920s and 1930s, because of the rich tin deposits in the area. The name "City of Millionaires" comes from this time. The city was hit hard by the sharp drop in tin prices in the late 1950s. Since then, many people have moved to other parts of Malaysia or Malaysia , especially to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore .

Almost 69% of Ipoh's population are ethnic Chinese . Although most of the early settlers who came to Ipoh to work in the tin mines were Hakka , more Chinese speak Cantonese in Ipoh today . Also Mandarin is widely spoken.
