Wenzhou ( Chinese 溫州 / 温州 , Pinyin Wēnzhōu , short: 甌 / 瓯 , Ōu ) is a district-free city in the south of the Zhejiang Province in the People's Republic of China . Wenzhou is located in a mountainous region on the Ou River, also called Ōu Jiāng ( 甌 江 / 瓯 江 ), about 30 km from the coast of the East China Sea and is the economic and cultural center of South Zhejiang. The city has an administrative area of 11,784 km² and around 9.18 million inhabitants (end of 2016). The closed settlement core of Wenzhou accommodates around 2.7 million inhabitants on an area of 1188 km² with a rapidly growing trend.
Administrative structure
At the county level, Wenzhou consists of four urban districts , five districts and three independent cities. These are:
- Dongtou district - 洞头 区Dòngtóu Qū ;
- Lucheng District - 鹿城 区Lùchéng Qū ;
- District Longwan -龙湾区Longwan Qū ;
- Ouhai District - 瓯海区Ōuhǎi Qū ;
- City of Longgang - 龙 港市Lónggǎng Shì ;
- City of Rui'an - 瑞安 市Ruì'ān Shì ;
- Yueqing City - 乐清 市Yuèqīng Shì ;
- District Yongjia -永嘉县Yǒngjiā Xiàn ;
- Wencheng County - 文 成 县Wénchéng Xiàn ;
- Pingyang County - 平阳县Píngyáng Xiàn ;
- County Taishun -泰顺县Taishun Xiàn ;
- Cangnan County - 苍南县Cāngnán Xiàn .
economy
The city and its region is a center of Chinese consumer goods production. Many small to medium-sized factories often work under simple conditions. Many of the businesses are now privately run, which has resulted in a substantial new owner-occupied bourgeoisie from poor backgrounds. The most important export products are textiles in mass production, leather and sports shoes (with up to 4000 companies, Wenzhou is the leading location in China), lighters (approx. 70% share worldwide), eyeglass frames (one of the most important production locations worldwide) or simpler electronic products. Since the wages in Wenzhou are already quite high by Chinese standards, the factory management is trying to set up branches or entire branches abroad, especially in Africa, but also in the Chinese hinterland, where production can be cheaper. It is noticeable that after a phase of almost exclusive orientation towards western product samples ("copies"), now increasingly also own design, e.g. B. in shoe models, is pushed into the tougher market. Wenzhou has an international port.
Niall Ferguson , in his book The West and the Rest of the World , calls Wenzhou the “Chinese Jerusalem” because there are so many Christian entrepreneurs in this city.
