Until 1992 , the Chinese license plates were green. On this was the name of the province and a combination of digits. Since 1992 the license plates have been blue with white lettering, and yellow with black lettering on large vehicles. They initially contain a one-character abbreviation of the name of the province, followed by a Latin letter, which allows a more precise regional assignment; this is followed by a combination of digits that are assigned by a computer. Foreigners receive black license plates. In some provinces the combination of five digits is no longer sufficient; combinations of digits and letters are used here, such as A 123A5, A BC345.

Hong Kong and Macau have their own license plates. If you want to go from there to the rest of the People's Republic, you need an additional (black) license plate.

Province abbreviation with the following O indicates a police vehicle, e.g. B. O, O. 使 , shǐ as the first character indicates embassy or consular vehicles . ( 甲乙丙 丁 戊 己 庚辛 壬癸 , jiǎ yi bǐng dīng wù jǐ gēng xīn rén guǐ ) as a provincial abbreviation or a vehicle with a red and a black symbol can be found on military vehicles.

In the summer of 2002, new (blue) license plates (with black letters) were issued in some cities, which allowed any combination of digits and letters according to the pattern 000–000, 000-XXX and XXX-000 (e.g. USA-911 ). However, this edition was canceled after a few months, so that only the 1992 standard has been in effect again since then.
