The circle Fengdu ( Chinese  丰都县 , pinyin Fengdu Xiàn ), with an area of 2,901 square kilometers a group of centrally-administered city Chongqing in southwest China . In the 2000 and 2010 censuses, Fengdu counted 774,054 and 649,182 residents, respectively.

The old urban area of ​​Fengdu was completely flooded by the damming of the Yangtze in 2007 , its approximately 100,000 residents were relocated to newly built, higher-lying settlements.

The name City of Spirits ( Ge 鬼城 , Fēngdū Guǐ Chéng ) was given to Fengdu because of the Daoist and Buddhist temples that arose there in the Han dynasty . There are a total of 75 Buddha and Taoist temples in the city, most of them are located on the Ming Shan hill above the dammed water level and are used specifically for tourism .

The Paleolithic Gaojiazhen site (Gaojiazhen yizhi 高家 镇 遗址) located in the district area has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China (5-102) since 2001 .
