Taiyuan ( Chinese 太原市 , Pinyin Taiyuan Shì ) is the capital of the province of Shanxi in the People's Republic of China and is located at 780 meters above sea level on the river Fen River . As a district-free city , Taiyuan has an administrative area of 6,988 km² and approx. 4.2 million inhabitants (2010).
Taiyuan has a history of over 2500 years and was founded in 497 BC. . AD under the name of Jinyang ( 晉陽 built).
Taiyuan is now an important industrial location in northern China. The most important branches of industry are: coal mining , iron smelting and the production of stainless steel and aluminum .
Taiyuan is home to the Taiyuan Cosmodrome , a smaller spaceport for the satellite launches of the Chinese Long March launcher .
The Jinci temple complex in Tàiyuán has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China (1-85) since 1961 . This list also includes the Yongzuo Temple (6-467).
Taiyuan maintains a city partnership with Chemnitz .

Shanxi Province is characterized by heavy industry and coal mining and has the largest coal reserves in China. The transport of coal, but also ore and steel, is usually carried out via the Chinese rail network . Measured by the tons of goods loaded in 2012, Taiyuan is the largest freight hub in the People's Republic of China. In a north-south direction, the Datong – Puzhou railway crosses the city of Taiyuan, and to the east of the city center is the Taiyuan passenger station.
