Yangquan
Yangquan ( Chinese 阳泉 市 , Pinyin Yangquan shì ) is a district-free city in the Chinese province of Shanxi with around 1,403,600 inhabitants (end of 2016). Yangquan is located in eastern central Shanxi and borders Hebei Province in the east . The administrative area of Yangquan covers an area of 4,451 km².
The Yangquan area was still an inhospitable wilderness towards the end of the 19th century. Only after the railway line from Shijiazhuang to Taiyuan began operating in 1903 and mining (coal, iron ore) developed with it, a small settlement emerged, which in 1936 had grown to over 30,000 inhabitants. Yangquan only received city rights in 1951.
Administrative structure
At the county level, Yangquan is made up of three boroughs and two counties. These are:
- Chengqu district (城区), the “inner city” district, 19 km², approx. 210,000 inhabitants, center, seat of the city government;
- Kuang District (矿区), the "mine" district, 10 km², approx. 220,000 inhabitants;
- Jiao district (郊区), the "suburb", 633 km², approx. 220,000 inhabitants;
- Pingding district (平定 县), 1,350 km², approx. 320,000 inhabitants, main town: Guanshan municipality (冠 山镇);
- Yu district (盂县), 2,439 km², approx. 290,000 inhabitants, capital: Xiushui municipality (秀水 镇).
