environmental pollution

The city was named one of the top ten most polluted places in the world by the Blacksmith Institute in 2006 and 2007. A Chinese ranking, which measures the environmental standards of 113 large cities in China, placed Linfen in last place in 2007. The Linfen Environment Agency has now reacted and, among other things, has deactivated more than 600 pollutant emitters. Therefore the ranking has improved to 46th place out of 113 until today (2009).

archeology

In Shanxi Province, near the city, archaeologists have come across a 4,100-year-old astronomical observatory . Similar to the circular systems of the Bronze Age in Europe, it was a semicircular field about 40 m in diameter. Around the area around 4 m high wooden pillars were set up, so that the course of the sunrises and sunsets, possibly also those of the moon and other stars, could be observed over the course of the year. According to a report by the China Daily , the observations only deviated by a maximum of 2 days from the traditional Chinese calendar, which is still in use today. Nearby, more precisely in Xiangfen , there is an approximately 4,300 year old Taosi site that shows traces of Neolithic settlement.
