Taosi

Taosi is a large Neolithic site of the Longshan culture and is located in Shanxi Province , China . Excavations were carried out from 1978 to 1983.

Its walls, made of compacted earth, are between seven and ten meters thick. They form an elongated rectangle with rounded corners, which with an edge length of 2000 m (east-west) by 1500 m (north-south) covers an area of ​​almost three million square meters.

History / description

Taosi was settled during the Miaodigou II and Longshan cultures (2500-1900 BC). The site includes a very large cemetery (over 30,000 m²) with around 1,000 graves. Most of the uncovered graves contain no grave goods, only six of them contained special items such as painted wooden coffins, jade, lacquer and ceramic ritual objects and musical instruments.

The items from the royal tombs include ceramic basins with dragon motifs, stone carillons, cast copper bells (quing) and a vessel (hu) on which there is a “wen” symbol written with a brush.

Furthermore, it was the about 4100-year-old in the field Observatory of Linfen found.
