Shaoyang ( Chinese  邵阳 市 , Pinyin Shàoyáng Shì ) is a district-free city in the Chinese province of Hunan . Shaoyang has an area of ​​20,829 km² and approx. 7.26 million inhabitants (2016). 574,527 people live in the actual urban settlement area of ​​Shaoyang (2010 census). The city forms a traffic and trade center in the upper Zi valley. The Shaoyang dialect of Xiang is spoken in Shaoyang .
