Changsha ( Chinese  長沙 市  /  长沙 市 , Pinyin Chángshā shì ? / I ) is the capital of the Chinese province of Hunan . As a district-free city , it has an area of ​​11,819 km² and approx. 7.04 million inhabitants (2010). The city is located on the Xiang River and is home to the largest Chinese restaurant in the world, the Xihulou . Audio file / audio sample

The city's official website states that 800 high-rise buildings have been built in recent years and 200 are under construction (as of 2012).

Administrative structure

At the county level, Changsha is made up of six boroughs , one county and two independent cities. These are:

  • Yuelu district ( 岳麓 区 ), 139 km², 380,000 inhabitants (end of 2003), center, seat of the city government;
  • Furong District ( 芙蓉 区 ), 42 km², 350,000 inhabitants;
  • Tianxin District ( 天心区 ), 74 km², 400,000 inhabitants;
  • District Kaifu ( 开福区 ), km² 187, 400,000 inhabitants;
  • District Yuhua ( 雨花区 ) square kilometers 114, 440,000 inhabitants;
  • Wangcheng District ( 望 城区 ), 1,361 km², 700,000 inhabitants, main town: Gaotangling Municipality ( 高 塘 岭镇 );
  • Changsha County ( 长沙 县 ), 1,997 km², 730,000 inhabitants, capital: Xingsha Municipality ( 星 沙镇 );
  • Ningxiang City ( 宁乡 市 ), 2,906 km², 1.29 million inhabitants;
  • City Liuyang ( 浏阳市 ), km² 4999, 1.38 million inhabitants.

The then five boroughs (excluding Wangcheng, which only became a borough on May 20, 2011) had a total of around 2.3 million inhabitants in 2010.

Population development

The urbanized agglomeration of Changsha had a population of 4.2 million in 2017. The remaining inhabitants lived in the rural surroundings of the city.

history

In 1904, Changsha became a port open to foreigners. In the period that followed, many Europeans and Americans settled there. Foreign influence was particularly evident in the construction of churches, educational institutions and small factories.

From 1912 to 1918 Mao Zedong was a student in Changsha. During this time he turned to communism . He returned to Changsha in April 1919, where he married his second wife, Yang Kaihui . In 2009, a 32 meter high granite bust of the young Mao was erected in Changsha.

In the Second Sino-Japanese War , the strategically important city was fought over. The Chinese were able to repel three attacks in 1939 , 1941 and 1942 , in the fourth battle in 1944 the Japanese were able to take Changsha. The city was largely destroyed and was only rebuilt after the founding of the People's Republic of China.

The city is the economic center of Hunan Province.

According to a study from 2014, Changsha has a gross domestic product of 186.41 billion US dollars in purchasing power parity . In the ranking of the economically strongest metropolitan regions worldwide, it was in 60th place. The GDP per capita is $ 25,143 (PEC). The GDP per capita grew by an average of 11.8% annually from 2000 to 2014.

Construction machinery manufacturers Sany and Zoomlion have their headquarters in Changsha.
