Zhu Rongji ( Chinese  朱鎔基  /  朱镕基 , Pinyin Zhū ​​Róngjī , W.-G. Chu Jung-chi , [ t͡ʂú ʐʊ̌ŋt͡ɕí ]; born October 23, 1928 in Changsha , Hunan Province , China ) is a Chinese politician who is one of the leading economic leaders Was a reformer in the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). From 1998 to 2003 he was China's prime minister .

Life

Zhu Rongji has been a member of the CCP since 1949. From 1947 to 1951 he completed his degree in electrical engineering at Tsinghua University in Beijing and then began to work as a deputy head of department in the State Planning Commission . Although he was exiled to northwest China twice for criticizing Mao Zedong's economic policies, he won the favor of Supreme Leader Deng Xiaoping and in 1987 was appointed Vice Party Secretary of Shanghai City . In 1988, Zhu was named mayor of Shanghai . He ensured an economic improvement in the city by clearing the way for foreign investment . In 1989 he rose to Shanghai's party secretary and in 1991 was finally appointed by Deng as vice-premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China . In 1993, he emerged as an economic reformer after assuming responsibility for the People's Bank of China and creating a program to combat inflation . Known for his pragmatism and factual approach, Zhu was appointed Prime Minister on March 17, 1998 .

As prime minister, he drew up a plan to reduce the number of government agencies and reform the heavily indebted banking system and state-owned companies, as well as the housing and health systems. He succeeded in shedding around a million administrative and military jobs . The United States attended Zhu first time officially in April 1999, he hoped the bilateral relations to improve and US support for China's accession to the World Trade Organization to obtain (WTO). In 2000, the US Congress voted to abolish the annual Congress report on China's Most Favored Nation status , which helped China join the WTO in 2001. In 2003, Zhu Rongji resigned from the prime ministerial office for reasons of age, and was succeeded by Wen Jiabao .

Zhu Rongji is a direct descendant of the Chinese emperor Hongwu (1328-1398), who founded the Ming Dynasty in 1368 .
